Well, as a long-time fan of FX shows, I can confidently say that the network never disappoints when it comes to delivering high-quality television. From “The Bear” to “Shōgun” and everything in between, their streak of hits is nothing short of epic. And now, with the release of “Say Nothing”, they’ve added another gem to their collection.
Without a doubt, you can always depend on FX to deliver some of the finest shows on Hulu. From “The Bear” and “Shōgun” to “Fargo”, there’s an impressive lineup of series that have made their winning streak truly epic. Now, their latest offering, the newly released “Say Nothing”, is now streaming on Hulu following positive reviews and a score of over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. So I know exactly what I’ll be engrossed in this weekend – binge-watching to my heart’s content!
It’s not often that I come across a TV lineup where an FX show doesn’t impress, but the 2024 schedule is overflowing with exceptional dramas such as “Fargo” and “Shōgun”, along with comedies like the third season of “The Bear” (which could easily pass for a drama), the debut season of “English Teacher”, and the final season of “What We Do In The Shadows”. Now, we can add “Say Nothing” to this list of standout shows.
Before delving into the subject matter of “Say Nothing“, allow me to share its Rotten Tomatoes rating first. At present, it boasts an impressive 92% on the Tomatometer, placing it alongside its FX counterparts in terms of critical acclaim. Here are excerpts from some reviews, along with their fresh scores:
- “It’s a terrible story of a terrible time that is barely over. And it is a beautifully acted interrogation of the power of silence, the loyalty it proves and the burden it brings. However, it feels overly sympathetic to its main characters.” -Lucy Mangan from The Guardian
- “FX’s latest historical drama may be called Say Nothing, but make no mistake, this excellent series has plenty to say.” -Lacy Baugher from Tell-Tale TV
- “The series, thanks to solid writing and even better acting, conjures many of the same emotions — anguish, dread, sorrow — as Keefe’s acclaimed 2018 book, and that’s quite an achievement.” -Mark Shanahan from The Boston Globe
- “Say Nothing is a triumph.” -Meghan O’Keefe from Decider
Indeed, that information alone is sufficient for me to immediately indulge in a marathon of the entire nine-episode series through my Hulu subscription. Yet, my enthusiasm for watching “Say Nothing” has been further fueled upon discovering its basis.
The television series, titled “Say Nothing,” is an adaptation from Patrick Radden Keefe’s 2018 book, “Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland.” Although some critics note that the show takes artistic liberties – a common practice with adaptations – it is grounded in actual events and effectively conveys the atmosphere of this period.
This drama is a “tale about murder, remembrance, and the tumultuous Northern Ireland conflict known as The Troubles,” according to FX Network’s site. It starts with the 1972 murder of Jean McConville, a mother of ten, and continues over four decades, focusing on individuals associated with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) during this difficult period. Essentially, it delves into the lengths some people will take in the name of their convictions, illustrating the extremes they may reach.
The trailer for the series shows also off its high action and seemingly fast pace, while also highlighting the heavy and important themes and historical lessons in the show, as you can see below:
Beyond these facts, the series showcases Lola Petticrew as Dolours Price, a character embroiled in the murder of Jean McConville and serving as a powerful symbol of radical politics. Prior to this role, she was seen in “Tuesday” alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and has appeared in shows such as “Bloodlands” and films like “She Said”. Given her past performances, it appears that this new project could serve as a significant stepping stone for her acting career.
Increasingly intrigued by Say Nothing, I can’t wait to dive in as soon as possible. It appears bold, fearless, and unlike anything else FX has offered, so if you’re not already planning to watch it, I highly recommend adding it to your Hulu queue.
