Notably, Sylvester Stallone plays the leading role of Barney Ross, the team’s commander, and has been significantly involved with the franchise, even co-writing the scripts for the first three movies in the series.
In regard to The Expendables 4 (stylized as Expend4bles), the final installment of the series, he opted to relinquish his role in production due to creative disagreements. Consequently, his screen time is minimal, and his character transfers leadership of the team to Lee Christmas, played by Jason Statham across all the films. Interestingly, real-life mirrored the reel one as Stallone proposed that Statham take up production duties, effectively stepping into a key role in the filmmaking process, replacing him.
Due to numerous delays in the script, production, cast, and the COVID-19 situation, the release of Expend4bles was repeatedly postponed. It eventually hit the screens in 2023, a full nine years after The Expendables 3. In this new adventure, the team confronts the villainous mercenary Suarto Rahmat (Iko Uwais), who aims to steal nuclear weapons on behalf of terrorist Ocelot, planning to ignite WWIII. Determined to avert a worldwide disaster, Christmas – a master of knives – joins forces with his fellow renowned Expendables team members.
Expend4bles was a Huge Flop
Contrary to its previous installments, “Expend4bles” faced a significant setback at the box office, earning only half of its $100 million production budget. The film was heavily criticized by both critics and viewers, who pointed out its subpar CGI and special effects, uninteresting script, and lackluster direction. However, Jason Statham’s performance and occasional humor injected some bright spots into the action-packed film. In an interview with Cinema Express, Statham candidly discussed Sylvester Stallone’s minimal role in the movie, stating, “He is missing for reasons we don’t discuss, we have to navigate this sea without him. There’s something unsettling about his absence… we are trying our best.” Interestingly, just as the film’s narrative portrays the impact of a key character’s disappearance, Stallone’s (and Barney’s) apparent absence may have shaken the team and potentially marked the end of the franchise.
3 Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
Under the guidance of director Ben Wheatley, the film titled Meg 2: The Trench serves as a follow-up to the 2018 release The Meg, derived from the novel The Trench by Steve Alten. Starring Jason Statham in the main role, the series capitalizes on his actual diving expertise, casting him as Jonas Taylor – a seasoned deep-sea diver with a knack for search and rescue missions. In the initial movie, Taylor encounters a colossal creature, a Megalodon or “Meg,” a gigantic prehistoric shark believed to be extinct. In this clash between action star and beast, it’s no shock that Statham’s character emerges victorious.
In “Meg 2”, it’s been six years since the incidents in “The Meg”. Now, Taylor is engaged in combating environmental offenses and investigating the Mariana Trench, where the Megalodon was located initially. Alongside encountering additional Megals, he uncovers an illicit deep-sea mining operation, masterminded by a ruthless mercenary with a personal grudge against him. This sets the stage for an intense underwater conflict.
Did Meg 2 Satisfy Audiences?
The reviews for “Meg 2: The Trench” were a blend of positive and negative, yet several shared common criticisms. They found that the narrative was overly prolonged, considering it’s categorized as an action-thriller, and surprisingly, the shark took a backseat in a film titled “man vs. shark.” Despite being nominated for Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Statham), and Worst Director (Wheatley) at the 44th Golden Raspberry Awards, “Meg 2” defied expectations by raking in an impressive $396 million at the box office.
2 The Beekeeper (2024)
In Jason Statham’s latest action-thriller directed by David Ayer, the concept of beekeeping as a symbol for benevolent vigilantism is pushed to its limits. Titled “The Beekeeper“, the story follows Adam Clay (played by Statham), an undercover human intelligence operative who doubles as a literal beekeeper, on a quest for vengeance after his compassionate landlady falls prey to a phishing scam that drains millions from her charity. But what is the name of the intelligence agency he seeks information from? Fittingly, it’s called The Beekeepers.
Clay is a relentless, solo demolition force, committed to seeking justice at any cost, as he confronts those behind the fraud – the sinister tech tycoon Derek Danforth (portrayed by Josh Hutcherson) and his minions, along with covert CIA operatives attempting to orchestrate his downfall. The methods are often brutal, as described by Ayer to Cinema Blend, “The beekeeper symbolizes the concept that there’s an unseen force that can step in and restore balance when society cannot fix itself.
Statham Brings The Beekeeper to Life
With earnings exceeding $150 million against a production cost of $40 million, The Beekeeper garnered even more acclaim on streaming platforms, as viewers couldn’t get enough of it. This is due to the film excelling at its fundamental essence – delivering an engaging action experience. Statham is lauded for embodying the rugged badassery he’s renowned for in his films, and the movie is described as a smooth, skillfully constructed thriller. However, according to MovieWeb’s review, “The beekeeping business seems somewhat preposterous, and the film doesn’t shy away from using every hackneyed bee-related pun.
Indeed, before portraying his role in “The Beekeeper”, Statham immersed himself in the art of beekeeping by learning the craft and genuinely working with live bees during scenes where his character interacts with them. The tranquil serenity of these instances stands in stark contrast to the brutal action that follows later on. Statham’s character, Clay, embodies two distinct personalities – a calm-natured beekeeper and a ruthless killer. The fusion of his tough-guy image as an action star with his commitment to authenticity effectively brings out this intriguing contrast.
1 Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
As a die-hard fan of cinematic thrills, let me tell you that the high-octane spin-off titled “Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw” was my latest addition to the Fast and Furious franchise. This action-packed extravaganza unfolds between the eighth and ninth episodes, “The Fate of the Furious” (2017) and “F9” (2021). In this gripping buddy comedy, Jason Statham takes on the role of Deckard Shaw, a seasoned mercenary and ex-British Special Forces operative, who finds himself reluctantly joining forces with his longstanding adversary, the formidable Luke Hobbs, portrayed by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Despite their mutual animosity, they are assigned by the CIA to hunt down a deadly virus known as Snowflake, in a race against time to thwart a malevolent terrorist organization from annihilating mankind.
Hobbs & Shaw Is Blockbuster Gold
During the making of the movie, there was a dispute when Neal H. Moritz, a longtime producer from the Fast & Furious series, sued Universal Pictures for breaking an oral agreement and deceit in business dealings, after he was replaced as the main producer for Hobbs & Shaw. The lawsuit was eventually resolved, with only Statham, Johnson (the film’s stars) and two others being credited as producers on the movie. Despite this, the film was a massive hit at the box office, earning $760 million against a budget of $200 million, with the success of the Fast franchise probably playing a significant role.
The film was also highly praised by critics, who acknowledged that it may not have matched the greatness of other Fast movies in terms of quality, but it certainly excelled as a blockbuster action film. Critics often referred to it as “extravagant,” with IndieWire commenting that “Hobbs & Shaw” is essentially an old-school slapstick comedy featuring two action stars. To put it simply, the storyline is rather implausible and won’t leave you pondering life’s deeper questions, but if you’re seeking a thrilling two hours filled with car chases, explosions, and Statham at his most appealing and captivating, this movie fits the bill.
