'Peacemaker' Justice League Cameo Not DCU Canon, Confirms James Gunn

As a devoted fan who has watched the evolution of DC Universe on screen since its inception, I must say that James Gunn’s approach to the DCU with Peacemaker is nothing short of intriguing. The way he’s weaving together a connected yet flexible universe reminds me of a spider spinning its web – it’s messy at first, but eventually, a beautiful pattern emerges.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that James Gunn has hinted that Peacemaker Season 1 will be canon within the DC Universe, with a notable exception. The first season of this riveting series premiered in January 2022, seamlessly integrating into the DCEU, following on from the events of The Suicide Squad, which was a sequel to the 2016 Suicide Squad.

In the context of Gunn’s new DCU, which features a different Superman and history than what was established in Peacemaker Season 1, fans have been curious about the canonical standing of Season 1. In an interview with IGN, Gunn clarified that “Almost all of Peacemaker is canon, except for the Justice League, which we’ll address in the upcoming season.” He also mentioned that the upcoming Creature Commandos will tie into events from Peacemaker Season 1, and Season 2 will draw on past events from both Season 1 and The Suicide Squad.

In a shift from his earlier statements about Peacemaker Season 1 being non-canonical within the DC Universe (DCU), Gunn’s approach to continuity for the DCU is akin to that of DC Comics during the New 52 era. This reboot, which occurred in 2011, kept the storylines of Batman and Green Lantern while everything else was essentially reset. This move was met with criticism due to perceived confusion, but it could prove more effective in filmmaking. For instance, if Gunn decides to bring back Wonder Woman without rehashing her origin, he could declare that the events of the 2017 film took place within his universe. Regardless of who takes on the role of Wonder Woman subsequently, like how Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after not playing the character in The Incredible Hulk, those events would be considered canon to the DCU.

Will a Connected DC Universe Work This Time?

The final episode of “Peacemaker” was broadcast when DC was aiming to unify their universe, as characters like Henry Cavill’s Superman showed up at the end of “Black Adam”, or Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman appeared in both “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” and “The Flash” together with Ben Affleck’s Batman. Yet, this event occurred too late, as it was only eight months after the “Peacemaker” season 1 finale featuring a Justice League cameo that James Gunn took on the role of co-chairman at DC Studios, leading to a revamp of his own DC Universe. Interestingly, neither Wonder Woman, Flash, nor Aquaman have been recast in the DCU as of yet, but Superman will now be played by David Corenswet instead of Henry Cavill.

In essence, although it might appear challenging for Peacemaker to deviate from the traditional DCEU narrative due to cameos by the Justice League, the show primarily functioned as a standalone entity. References to characters like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and the Flash were made, but they didn’t necessarily tie into the specific versions of these characters within the DCEU. Hypothetically, these could be reimagined as the fresh incarnations of these heroes in the new DCU. Even the Justice League appearances could be viewed as humorous in-jokes, with Peacemaker interpreting the team’s ever-changing lineup and dismissive attitude towards him as evidence of various conspiracy theories. This approach by Gunn for the new DCU signifies a shift from dwelling on past narratives to embracing the exciting narrative opportunities that this new universe offers.
