As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation upon hearing about the return of Dennis Dugan to the director’s chair for “Happy Gilmore 2”. With his extensive history working alongside Adam Sandler in some of my all-time favorite comedies like “Big Daddy” and “Grown Ups”, I have no doubt that this sequel will be just as hilarious as the original.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been announced that Dennis Dugan, who directed Happy Gilmore, will be back behind the camera for the upcoming Netflix sequel starring Adam Sandler.
In the upcoming movie “Happy Gilmore 2,” Dugan, who serves as an executive producer, will once again play the character of golf tour commissioner Doug Thompson – a role he first brought to life in the 1996 comedy. The new film, being led by Kyle Newacheck and currently under production, has not yet set a release date.
Happy Gilmore, played by Sandler once again, reappears as the main character. Originally, he was a failed hockey player who surprisingly excelled in golf because of his powerful swings. Some familiar faces returning from the first film include Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and Ben Stiller. The new cast members are Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Margaret Qualley, Scott Mescudi, Travis Kelce, and golfer John Daly, who make appearances as well.
Once again, Sandler, Tim Herlihy, Robert Simonds, and Jack Giarraputo are back to work on the follow-up. Sandler and Herlihy, who wrote the script for the first Happy Gilmore, have penned the screenplay for this sequel as well.
Universal Studios first premiered the movie “Happy Gilmore” on February 16, 1996. Since then, it has gained a dedicated fanbase and is often considered one of Adam Sandler’s most cherished roles. Later, Dugan worked with Sandler in several hit comedies such as “Big Daddy”, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry”, “You Don’t Mess With the Zohan”, “Just Go With It”, and “Grown Ups” along with its sequel. Dugan has also directed other films like “Problem Child”, “Beverly Hills Ninja”, and “National Security”.
In more recent times, Dugan has taken on both writing and directing duties for the comedy film “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters,” featuring Diane Keaton, which premiered in cinemas last year. Earlier this year, he also wrote and acted in a one-act play titled “The Audition” that was performed in New York City.
To start off, Dugan embarked on his journey in the entertainment world as an actor. Notably, he has made appearances not only in several of his own productions but also in the 2024 films such as “Knox Goes Away” starring Michael Keaton and the Spanish-titled feature film “Father There Is Only One 4”.
Previously in an interview with THR, Dugan mentioned that he had attempted, unsuccessfully, to cast Sandler in a role for his 1992 film “Brain Donors”. Later, when Dugan met with Sandler and the original team of Happy Gilmore, he was offered the director’s position without needing to make any pitches. This was because Sandler remembered Dugan from his earlier support.
According to Dugan, Sandler exclaimed, “You!” To which I responded, “You!” He later explained, “Since you defended me, you’re taking part in this film.
A representative for Netflix declined to comment on Dugan’s casting in Happy Gilmore 2.
