As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of immersion in the DC Universe, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement tingling down my spine as we delve deeper into this shared continuity that is the DC Universe. The interwoven narrative threads across movies and TV shows are reminiscent of the intricate web spun by the Trickster himself, Eobard Thawne – a connection I can’t help but appreciate.
In the near future, both DC movies and TV shows set to premiere will take place within the same universe known as the DC Universe, a fresh continuity emerging from the remnants of the DC Extended Universe. Despite this transition, certain elements from the previous reality persist, such as the events of The Suicide Squad being considered canon in the DCU. Consequently, the Max subscription-exclusive spinoff series Peacemaker, which follows these events, is also considered canon, with one significant exception. Fortunately, creator and co-head of DC Studios, James Gunn, has revealed that this inconsistency will be addressed in season 2 of Peacemaker.
In a chat with IGN, filmmaker James Gunn (responsible for both writing and directing The Suicide Squad and the upcoming Superman film) confirmed that the Justice League scene in the Peacemaker Season 1 finale is exclusively linked to the DC Extended Universe. But when Season 2 airs on our TV schedules in 2025, it won’t just disregard this connection – as Gunn explained.
Essentially, most of what’s shown in Peacemaker aligns with established lore, except for Justice League-related elements, which we’ll address in the upcoming season of Peacemaker.
If you’re catching up, here’s a summary: After John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, and his group dismantled Project Butterfly, they encountered Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and The Flash – with Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller portraying the latter two. Unfortunately for them, the Justice League arrived after the battle, missing the opportunity to aid in the fight. This delay provided an amusing moment as Smith hurled some jibes at his super-powered counterparts. It’s worth noting that throughout Peacemaker Season 1, Smith had a habit of spewing insults and spreading falsehoods about these superheroes, among others, as per the character he portrays.
How might “Peacemaker” Season 2 handle the collision of continuities? It’s plausible that they will delve into a flashback to the Season 1 finale, but with a twist: instead of the DCEU’s Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Flash, other heroes may take their places. To be frank, I wouldn’t be surprised if this particular team of heroes doesn’t align with the DCU version. It’s possible that David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman could make an appearance, but characters like Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl or Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific might also be introduced instead.
In a casual manner, this could be rephrased as: Irrespective of other factors, presenting our storyline connected to the Peacemaker series within the DC Universe doesn’t have to be a grand spectacle. This is simply an idea I’ve had for now, and it’s one of many mysteries that might unfold in Season 2 of Peacemaker. At this point, we haven’t received any specific plot details yet, but we do know that Frank Grillo will resume his role as Rick Flag Sr., having previously voiced the character in Creature Commandos and portrayed him on screen in Superman. Sol Rodríguez and Tim Meadows are also set to play Sasha Bordeaux and Langston Fleury, respectively.
Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere in August 2025 and consist of eight episodes, all of which James Gunn wrote and three of which he directed. Ahead of this, Creature Commandos drops December 5 on Max, and Superman’s theatrical release follows on July 11, 2025.
