What's Going On With Star Trek's Live-Action Comedy? Lower Decks' Tawny Newsome Shared A Positive Update

As a seasoned gamer and avid Star Trek fan, I find myself eagerly anticipating the upcoming live-action comedy series being developed by Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien. With my years of immersing myself in the vast Star Trek universe, I can’t help but reminisce about the comedic moments that have graced our screens throughout the franchise’s history.

“Star Trek: Lower Decks is among the shows ending in 2024 and beyond, yet there are preliminary plans to maintain a comedic element within the franchise. At San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that Tawny Newsome is working on an upcoming live-action Trek comedy show, co-created with Justin Simien. Details about this project have been scarce since then, but Newsome’s recent update seems optimistic.

The storyline of this series remains largely unknown, but we do know that it centers around two employees at a resort who uncover the fact that their everyday activities are being broadcast to a vast section of the galaxy. Newsome has expressed her desire for her colleagues from Star Trek: Lower Decks to make an appearance, but only if the show receives approval first. Here’s what she recently told Collider about this possibility:

Essentially, we’re told to keep going, so as long as they let us write, we’ll carry on creating. I won’t stop working on it until they tell me otherwise, and honestly, I couldn’t be happier. I’m deeply fond of Justin Simien, and I can’t wait to continue this journey with him.

Although it’s not certain that this series will get approved yet, the fact she’s asked to submit more scripts is certainly a hopeful indication. However, it seems we might be quite far from actually seeing any episodes from this show, which is supported by the upcoming lineup of Trek shows. We are aware that Star Trek: Section 31 will debut in the new year, and we anticipate Strange New Worlds Season 3 to be scheduled for TV in 2025 as well.

Though “Star Trek” has always had comical instances in its past, venturing into a live-action comedy series is uncharted territory. It’s intriguing to speculate whether this concept might have stemmed from the blend of the exaggerated humor seen in the animated series with the other live-action realms, as portrayed in “Strange New Worlds” and “Lower Decks”.

A valuable lesson that the Strange New Worlds team reportedly gained was something Cinemablend shared, and this insight could also be beneficial for Tawny Newsome. In a conversation with us, she discussed the Mariner-isms she found challenging in the crossover. Although she might study Lower Decks to understand comedy within Star Trek better, the live-action crossover could have revealed some limitations to her.

It’s important to mention that Tawny Newsome is part of the writing team for Starfleet Academy, which means she’s juggling scriptwriting for their exceptional cast too. In essence, it seems plausible that we won’t see any live-action comedy from Star Trek for a few more years. I really hope I’m incorrect, but I don’t think Newsome will be the one to reveal details about this series.

As she’s busy working on that live-action comedy, don’t forget to check out Tawny Newsome in the last season of “Star Trek: Lower Decks”, available for streaming every Thursday. With just a few episodes left, be sure to catch up and join other fans in watching the series finale together!
