As a longtime fan of Samay Raina‘s work, I must admit that I was initially disappointed by his recent response to the backlash over the insensitive joke about Deepika Padukone’s depression on India’s Got Latent. Having followed his career since its inception and admired his unique brand of humor, it feels disheartening to see him mocking a serious issue like mental health.
Comedian Samay Raina’s YouTube series “India’s Got Latent” garnered attention recently due to a contestant joking about Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone’s struggle with depression. Online users expressed disapproval, and now Samay has addressed the backlash he received. Instead of simply being outraged, he urged his supporters to express their dissent in a manner that could potentially work to his advantage.
On November 18, 2024, Samay Raina responded on X (previously known as Twitter) beneath a popular video clip of a joke from his show. The comments section of the video was flooded with displeased responses from internet users who felt a boundary had been breached.
Instead of mocking the backlash, Samay playfully requested, “Fellas, this isn’t fair. Don’t express your outrage on Twitter; instead, vent it in my YouTube comment section. That way, at least I can generate some ad revenue.

For those unfamiliar, the newest installment of the reality series “India’s Got Talent” featured its creator, Samay Raina, joining forces with Tanmay Bhat, Raghu Ram, Dr. Sid Warrier, and Balraj Singh Ghai on the judges’ panel.
A contestant mentioned that Deepika Padukone had just given birth to her baby girl Dua. He humorously added, “Now, Deepika has firsthand experience with what true depression feels like.” This comment elicited laughter and praise from the panelists.
The contestant explained, “I’m not intending to disparage someone dealing with post-breakup depression,” then clarified, “In fact, that is exactly what I am experiencing.
People on the internet expressed significant disapproval towards these comments and criticized both the contestant and the judges for ridiculing mental health issues. A tweet read, “Deepika only wished to educate others about her struggles so that discussing it becomes more commonplace… Yet here we are, focusing on her exes instead, and even mocking her motherhood? You guys are really small, incredibly small.
Over the course of several years, Deepika Padukone has openly discussed her battles with depression. Furthermore, she established The Live Love Laugh Foundation, which focuses on promoting mental health understanding. However, regarding the recent uproar, the actress has remained silent.
In September 2024, Deepika gave birth and frequently shares insights about her motherhood experience on social media. Recently, she appeared in the film “Singham Again,” alongside her spouse, Ranveer Singh.
