Steven Spielberg Casts Josh O'Connor in New Summer Movie

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, let me tell you, it’s not every day that we get to witness a cinematic titan like Steven Spielberg gearing up for another blockbuster. The man who brought us the terrifying shark from deep waters, the unforgettable alien in our living rooms, and the heart-wrenching tales of love lost and found, is at it again.

Steven Spielberg is rounding out his next secret project with a star-studded English cast. The legendary director of Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, E.T., and so, so, so many more is returning to theaters in 2026 with a project that could be his next big blockbuster. The film still remains untitled, and plot details are scarce, but we’ve just learned who will be joining the already amazing ensemble cast.

By the specified deadline, Josh O’Connor will be sharing the screen with Emily Blunt in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie. O’Connor has recently emerged from the success of Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed tennis/sex drama, known as “Challengers”. Additionally, the actor had an outstanding year in 2023, featuring in the Kate Winslet-led production titled “Lee” and the underappreciated gem, “La Chimera”.

The upcoming movie project of Steven Spielberg, yet to be named, boasts an impressive cast that includes Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, along with additional A-list actors such as Emily Blunt and Paul O’Connor. The script was jointly written by Spielberg and his frequent collaborator David Koepp. Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, which is owned by Spielberg himself, are producing this film.

Starting in 1959, Steven Spielberg began his directing journey with the short film titled “The Last Gun“. Then, in 1964, he directed his first full-length feature film called “Firelight“. However, it was after directing the movie “Duel” (written by famous science fiction writer Richard Matheson) in 1971 that Spielberg’s career really took flight. In 1975, he sent shivers down everyone’s spine with “Jaws“, a film that made the world fear sharks and open waters, while also paving the way for the popular “summer blockbuster” release period.

65 years after starting his directing career, Spielberg continues to show no signs of slowing down, with plans to direct three upcoming films on the horizon. One of these projects involves Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor. Additionally, Spielberg is planning a modern take on a ’60s classic, titled “Bullitt,” which will focus on the character Frank Bullitt, previously played by Steve McQueen. This film is particularly notable for its iconic car chase. On top of that, Spielberg is aiming to correct Ridley Scott’s missteps with his reinterpretation of Napoleon Bonaparte’s story, set for release as a biopic series on television. The title of this series is “Napoleon,” and no further details have been disclosed at this time.

Beyond his directorial roles, Steven Spielberg is also actively involved in production through Amblin Entertainment. At the moment, he’s overseeing no less than 21 upcoming projects. Some of the highly anticipated productions on his slate include “Jurassic World Rebirth” featuring Scarlett Johansson, a revamped “Cape Fear” series, a project with Morgan Freeman that remains untitled, a fusion of “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe”, the intriguing “Cola Wars”, Chloé Zhao’s take on “Hamnet”, another installment of the “Tintin” series, and the sequel to “Real Steel”.

A significant number of the projects mentioned are currently in their initial stages and might not reach the production phase. Regardless, the workload associated with these projects surpasses that of any filmmaker active today. Furthermore, Spielberg has lent his expertise as an advisor to esteemed directors such as George Lucas and Ridley Scott, and fortunately, prevented a subpar script for Gladiator II from materializing.

Steven Spielberg’s new untitled movie is set to release on May 15, 2026.
