As a long-time follower of Fleetwood Mac and someone who grew up with their iconic tunes echoing through the halls of my youth, I am beyond excited about this upcoming documentary. Frank Marshall has proven his mettle in music documentaries, and I can’t wait to see how he brings together the band’s captivating story that spans over five decades.
It’s exciting news that your beloved British-American rock group, Fleetwood Mac, is finally getting a long-overdue, officially endorsed documentary. Renowned director Frank Marshall, known for his work on music documentaries like “The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” and “The Beach Boys,” will be helming this project. Apple has been chosen as the distributor for this highly anticipated film, which is said to be the first fully authorized documentary about the band known for hits such as “Dreams” and “The Chain.
On Tuesday, it was announced that an as-yet-unnamed documentary will delve into the journey of Fleetwood Mac’s key members throughout their career that has lasted over five decades. (A little history lesson: Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham were the rulers of the ’70s music scene.) Although their story is generally well-known for its personal struggles, feuds, friendships, romantic entanglements, and lineup changes, the documentary promises to offer fans never-before-seen footage of the band members. As per the announcement, the film will feature new, exclusive interviews as well as archival interviews from the late, beloved Christine McVie, who passed away in 2022.
I’m captivated by the extraordinary journey behind this phenomenal musical success story. Fleetwood Mac somehow intertwined their tumultuous, almost operatic personal experiences into their own narrative as it unfolded, which later became legendary. Our film will focus on the music and the artists who brought it to life.” – Frank Marshall in a statement release
Acclaimed globally for iconic albums such as Tusk and Rumours, Fleetwood Mac stands among the world’s top-selling musical groups. Their captivating tale, hinted at in their music, is further unveiled in an upcoming official documentary according to Marshall, promising a unique portrayal of their extraordinary lives.
Apple Is in the Documentary Business
Given the surge in popular documentaries and series about notable figures, it seems there couldn’t be a more opportune moment for the renowned rock band’s life story to be revealed. Apple is excelling with its documentary ventures, as demonstrated by their other artist-focused productions such as Selena Gomez’s “My Mind & Me,” Michael J. Fox’s “Still,” and Steve Martin’s two-part series, “Steve!”. Notably, Apple has managed to secure the band’s approval for the documentary, which is remarkable given the challenges faced by artists like Madonna in getting their own documentaries produced.
As I eagerly anticipate the upcoming documentary about Fleetwood Mac, I’m thrilled to learn that Cassidy Hartmann of White Horse and Tony Rosenthal from Kennedy/Marshall Company will serve as executive producers. However, it’s Mark Monroe who will pen and oversee this project, with Marshall himself also producing through The Kennedy/Marshall Company. Nicholas Ferrall from White Horse Pictures, along with Jeanne Elfant Festa and Aly Parker from Kennedy/Marshall, are also part of the team. With such a dedicated crew in place, I can’t help but feel excited about what unique insights the band members might choose to share, and how this story will unfold for us all to see.
Apple’s untitled Fleetwood Mac documentary does not have a release date yet.
