Michelle Yeoh Felt Like a “Failure” for Not Having Children, Says It Broke Her First Marriage

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich, diverse worlds of various video games, I can empathize with Michelle Yeoh on a different level than most. Just like her character in ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, we navigate through our own universes, facing challenges and overcoming obstacles.

Michelle Yeoh expressed this week that she felt deeply disappointed and unsuccessful because she couldn’t conceive children, as she discussed the topic of infertility in a recent conversation.

She expressed that the most challenging period she experiences is every month when she feels like a failure. However, it’s not due to lack of effort as she has always cherished and continues to adore babies.

The actress from the movie “Everything Everywhere All at Once” stated clearly, “I feel it’s up to a woman to decide. Whether or not you wish to have children is your decision, and no one should pressure you into it… however, I’ve always desired to become a mother.

In my personal journey, experiencing infertility significantly affected my first marriage to Sir Dickson Poon. We exchanged vows in 1988, but our paths separated again in 1992.

She mentioned that when she got married for the first time, it was evident that our union was primarily focused on starting a family and continuing the lineage. Over time, unfortunately, the relationship disintegrated, which was incredibly painful but ultimately necessary.

Additionally, these are discussions that require introspection and the ability to peer into the future. You need to ask yourself, ‘Yes, we’re deeply in love now, but will I be able to provide him with the family he desires in 10 or 20 years?’ It’s crucial to be fair in a relationship, which is why these conversations between partners are so essential. If one person wants something and the other doesn’t, it’s important to address this issue right from the start, because unresolved differences can lead to pain… So I believe it took courage for us to acknowledge, to say, ‘Let’s not prolong this uncertainty.’

Poon has five kids, and Yeoh serves as godmother to his oldest. Last year, she tied the knot with Jean Todt, and more recently, she became a grandma to her stepson’s baby.

She said, “I’m 62 years old, so having a baby isn’t an option for me at this moment, but let me tell you, we recently welcomed a grandchild into our family. This makes us feel incredibly fortunate because it means we still get to experience the joy and love that comes with having a baby in our lives.

She remarked, “At some stage, you should cease self-blame. I’m of the belief that there are aspects in your body that don’t work as expected. That’s just how it is… You need to release and move forward. And I believe you reach a point where you must stop blaming yourself.
