Blake Lively Helped Fix 'Deadpool & Wolverine's Underwhelming Ending

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic heroes over the years, I must say that the collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine, under the masterful direction of Shawn Levy, has truly left an indelible mark on my movie-loving heart. The film’s dramatic ending, which saw our titular anti-heroes sacrificing themselves for the greater good, was made all the more impactful thanks to a small but crucial input from none other than Blake Lively.

In a notable role, Blake Lively wasn’t merely a cameo in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” but significantly influenced the dramatic finale. Led by director Shawn Levy, this blockbuster collaboration between the titular characters (currently setting records on Disney+) placed them against Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), an ambitious agent of the Time Variance Authority, and Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin), the malevolent twin sibling of Professor X. In the climactic scene, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) prepared to selflessly give up their lives to protect their timeline.

In a conversation with GamesRadar+, director Shawn Levy shared that the original version of the scene lacked tension. After defeating the time ripper, Deadpool and Wolverine strolled away unharmed, without any hint of concern for their lives. “I’ll give credit where it’s due. Previously, there was no suspense as the power room exploded, and our heroes emerged unscathed,” Levy said. The director proposed that the scene needed to be reshaped to leave viewers wondering if the duo had actually survived. He went on to say:

Blake Lively expressed her desire to experience the intensity of the characters’ survival by saying, “I’ve been with you throughout this entire movie. I want to feel the fear of their potential loss, to fully appreciate the emotional and physical impact of their triumph when they survive.

In the end, making that decision was definitely the correct one. The revised scene significantly increased the emotional intensity of the film, and fans became quite anxious about Deadpool and/or Wolverine meeting their demise in this movie, given the possibility that Reynolds and Jackman might have played their last performances as these characters. As Levy put it, “This reshoot gave us a fresh perspective on this aspect of the movie, and the end result is much more rewarding.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Only Had a “Day-and-a-Half” of Reshoots

Contrary to what some online experts or doubting fans may lead you to think, reshooting scenes is actually a common practice in movie-making. Once the main filming has been completed, the raw footage is edited into a preliminary version of the movie. This allows the filmmakers to assess which parts work well, which don’t, and what necessitates re-filming. The reshoots carried out by Lively led to minor adjustments in the films Deadpool & Wolverine, but Ryan Reynolds mentioned that the entire process was significantly shorter compared to most big-budget superhero productions.

During the interview, the actor shared that we only spent a short span of two days re-filming parts of the movie, which they’re particularly pleased with. In addition to reworking the climactic scene for greater tension, director Shawn Levy also incorporated a speech by Mr. Paradox, boasting about his schemes. The actor added that such movies usually require numerous weeks of reshoots. However, the speech delivered by Matthew is one of the scenes we re-shot, and it’s nothing short of remarkable.

The action-packed duo of Deadpool and Wolverine is now available for streaming on Disney+. Following an impressive run at the box office and a groundbreaking home video and VOD release, the film has continued to make history on the platform. In honor of the release of Deadpool & Wolverine on Disney+, Ryan Reynolds shared a previously unseen montage from the movie.
