As a long-time fan of League of Legends and its rich universe, I must say that the integration of these iconic champions into the storyline of Arcane has been nothing short of exhilarating! Each appearance feels like a nostalgic nod to the game’s lore while also adding depth and complexity to the characters we see on screen.
One appealing aspect of Netflix’s “Arcane,” aside from the series itself being exceptional, is the skillful way it weaves in the characters from “League of Legends” within its narrative.
Although not all League of Legends characters may have storylines as impactful as Jinx or Ekko, the show cleverly incorporates several Easter Eggs that only avid gamers can recognize. Here are some amazing nods to League champions that went unnoticed by those who haven’t played.
Viktor
(Season 1, Act 1, Episode 2)
As a gamer, I often find myself focusing on the brawlers and weapon-wielding characters, such as Vi and Jayce, in this series. Yet, it’s crucial to remember that not all champions excel at combat – take Heimerdinger, for instance, who reigns supreme when it comes to his strategic prowess in the game.
It might come as a shock to some enthusiasts, but you should know that the character Viktor in LoL is famously referred to as the Machine Herald. This individual is a significantly modified person who strives to elevate the citizens of Zaun through technological advancements. Although Viktor’s physical appearance may differ greatly from his in-game likeness, it’s not inconceivable that the storyline could culminate with him adorning a mask and sporting a third arm reminiscent of Death Stranding.
Singed
(Season 1, Act 1, Episode 1)
Scientist Corin Reveck, who was initially presented in the first season of Arcane as the inventor of the drug Shimmer, didn’t acquire his distinctive appearance – a shaved head and masked face – until the second season of the show.
It’s widely understood that he failed in his attempts to hinder Vander/Warwick’s recovery. However, some astute viewers believe he might have administered the serum that caused Warwick to become unstable following Jayce’s alleged killing of Viktor.
Ryze
(Season 1, Act 1, Episode 2)
Although Ryze’s screen time is limited, many spectators believe that he is the sorcerer who aids Jayce with enchantments in the flashback scene. Despite not possessing blue skin, it is speculated among fans that his ability to transport individuals and distinctive markings on his skin make him a likely candidate for the mage from the game.
Another idea posits that the mage might have been a time-traveler named Viktor, yet it’s important to note that he is already established as an individual within the game itself.
Kindred
(Season 1, Act 2, Episode 5)
It’s plausible that it wasn’t the characters directly, but rather a sign or symbol: the duo known as Kindred, Lamb and Wolf, were seen by Caitlyn upon her and Vi’s entrance into the undercity brothel, where they aimed to collect information.
In a casual and clear rephrasing, we might say: Cait observes two individuals donning distinctive masks adorned with Kindred-like colors and symbols. These masks carry an air of mystery, leading some to wonder if these patrons of the brothel could be Kindred themselves disguised as humans.
But if anything, it’s probably just a reference for LoL players to catch.
Teemo
(Season 1, Act 2, Episode 6)
Among the adorable titans of League of Legends, there’s Teemo – a member of the race of longevity known as Yordles, which includes characters like Heimerdinger. He’s easily recognized by his distinctive hat and goggles, and his weapon of choice is a blow dart.
Onlookers may identify Teemo as Silco barges into Marcus’ residence to intimidate his daughter. One of Silco’s associates is observed rummaging through a book, and among its pages, there’s an image of Teemo, accompanied by a blow dart.
Janna
(Season 2, Act 1, Episode 3)
Janna, being an unforeseen surprise, primarily focused on wind magic as a mage character – a bit off-beat for the realistic narrative of Arcane.
Janna is a spiritual entity believed to be revered by the citizens of Zaun, often depicted as a sculpture within an underground passageway. It’s here where Jinx and Vi engage in what seems like their final confrontation, with Jinx herself referring to tales once shared by Vander about Janna.
Aren’t those ancient bedtime tales by Janna that Vander shared with us coming back? The ones about miners in trouble deep beneath the earth, running out of breath? But just when all hope seemed lost, a gentle breeze woman appeared, rescuing them.
At the conclusion of Vi and Jinx’s battle, Janna’s statue gets damaged. This might indicate that a new narrative could be set in motion, potentially rewinding the timeline to delve into Janna’s tale within this particular universe.
Orianna
(Season 2, Act 2, Episode 5)
As a captivated fan, I’ve encountered tragic scientist characters striving to resurrect lost loved ones in various works of fiction. Yet, it wasn’t until Reveck disclosed his intentions that I realized the girl in the tank was not just anyone; she was a renowned League champion.
In the game, Orianna was primarily a character with a mechanical essence, accompanied by an orb that housed her advanced hextech core. Her narrative revolves around her falling sick following an accident in the subterranean city of Zaun, which eventually led to her body being gradually replaced with mechanical components.
As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I’m not quite sure if Arcane has plans for Orianna to transform into a steampunk robot by the end of this season, but one thing is clear – Reveck’s hard work isn’t going unrewarded.
LeBlanc
(Season 2, Act 2, Episode 5)
Without a doubt, one intriguing plotline from the second season revolves around Mel, who was kidnapped by ‘The Black Rose’, a character seemingly harboring long-standing animosity towards her mother, Ambessa.
In summary, LeBlanc is the leader of the Black Rose gang, which holds influence in the Noxian territory governed by Ambessa. Known for her skill with illusion magic, LeBlanc demonstrates an ability to alter her appearance as she pleases. According to legend, LeBlanc has the power to adopt various personas throughout history, so it’s believed that different manifestations of LeBlanc have been in charge of the Black Rose over time.
Her objectives regarding Mel aren’t apparent at this point, but they could potentially be linked to Ambessa’s encounter with the Black Rose in the past.
Ambessa
(Season 1, Act 3, Episode 8)
Among the latest additions to “League of Legends“, the character Ambessa, was first presented in “Arcane” and subsequently emerged as a major adversary during the second season.
As a gamer, I find myself taking on the persona of Ambessa, the iron-willed ruler of Noxus, often compared to ancient Sparta. Known for her cunning intellect and battlefield prowess, she’s no stranger to ruthlessness. Yet, there’s more to her story. Ambessa has chosen to step away from her throne in Noxus, seeking a pivotal role within Piltover’s government. Now, she stands at the helm of their war against Zaun, while simultaneously elevating Caitlyn to the forefront of their police force.
