As a devoted cinephile who has traversed the vast and varied landscapes of cinema, I can confidently say that Paul W.S. Anderson is a director whose work resonates deeply with me. His unique blend of action-packed spectacles, anti-authoritarian themes, and European sensibilities sets him apart from his peers.

It appears that obtaining fresh or completed content these days can be quite challenging. However, we’re fortunate as Paul W.S. Anderson is drawing from his extensive body of work for his latest project with long-time collaborator and spouse, and a first-time collaborator who isn’t a spouse. Their fantasy epic titled “In Lost Lands” is scheduled to premiere in theaters on February 25th, 2025. Martin recently posted a new image related to this project on his blog, which you can view below.

Anderson has shared some must-revisit movies, including “Event Horizon” (also known as “Hellraiser in space”), “The Three Musketeers”, and of course, the “Resident Evil” series. This filmmaker combines the anti-authoritarian/anti-imperial sentiments common among French and British directors with the fast-paced, dynamic action style prevalent in American and Hong Kong cinema. Anderson previously spoke to Deadline about “In Lost Lands” back in September.

In “The Forgotten Realms,” we’ve crafted a film with an entirely novel visual aesthetic and narrative, leveraging state-of-the-art technology to breathe life into the tale in an unprecedented manner. Therefore, it was crucial for me that this masterpiece be experienced on the grandeur of the big screen. Consequently, I couldn’t be more elated that Vertical Entertainment is bringing “The Forgotten Realms” to American cinemas.

The narrative of “In Lost Lands” revolves around the central character, the potent sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich), who is commissioned by a heartless queen to explore the eponymous forsaken lands in search of a magical artifact that enables metamorphosis into a werewolf. In her journey, Gray is joined by a cryptic hunter named Boyce (Bautista), who assists her in combating the horrific beasts and adversaries lurking within the ominous realm.

The screenplay for “In Lost Lands” was written by Anderson and producer/writer Constantin Werner, who obtained the rights to several of Martin’s short stories as far back as 2015. Despite Anderson’s films receiving mostly negative reviews from critics throughout his career, he has managed to earn substantial profits at the box office. Remarkably, not one of his films has a “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but collectively, they have grossed over a billion dollars worldwide.

The criticism leveled at Anderson’s films, often citing their lack of nuance, awkward dialogue, and one-dimensional characters, has been harsh. However, over time, several of his earlier productions have gained favorable reviews once more. Even the film Event Horizon has been praised as one of the finest horror movies ever made. When viewed from a different perspective, such as considering him a European director, the style and sensibilities in his work become crystal clear. As creations of American cinema (and many were marketed as such), their action-oriented style, anti-capitalist/authority themes (such as Aliens vs Predator, Death Race, Resident Evil, Soldier) and geometric visual aesthetic can seem strange and out of place. However, if we imagine him as a French director like Jean-Pierre Jeunet directing Alien: Resurrection, Anderson’s vision becomes much clearer.

After unveiling fresh pictures from “In Lost Lands” and setting a release date, it’s only a matter of time before we get a sneak peek at the upcoming fantasy adventure in the form of a trailer.
