As a long-time fan of both DC Comics and Alan Tudyk’s exceptional voice acting, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming “Creature Commandos” series! With Tudyk reprising his role as Dr. Phosphorus and Clayface, it feels like Christmas has come early!
The 2024 TV lineup signals the beginning of James Gunn’s DCU, as evidenced by the December premiere of “Creature Commandos”. This Max Original Series boasts an impressive cast led by renowned voice actor Alan Tudyk, and it promises to launch the future of DC TV productions with a series of explosive starts. In this production, the star of “Harley Quinn” has disclosed that he will not only play the part of Dr. Phosphorus, but also reprise his role as Clayface. To add to the excitement, a video has surfaced showing him masterfully portraying two distinct versions of the character. I’m still in awe over it!
It’s clear that Mr. Tudyk’s good fortune with Disney is evident and appears to extend into his work for DC Studios too. This seems to be reflected in James Gunn’s choice to have him play his Clayface character again in another animated project. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, along with the cast of Creature Commandos, Mr. Tudyk described how this new Max Original will develop his character in a unique way.
I think it’s a spoiler, I don’t think I’ve been able to [say]. Anyway, I actually play Clayface in this series. So I play Clayface in Harley Quinn … and he’s an idiot. But in [Creature Commandos] Clayface is a killer. We have a huge fight, and he’s a homicidal maniac.
It seems quite clear that a Clayface character going up against Rick Flag Sr., portrayed by Frank Grillo, in the animated setting of Creature Commandos, would be an undeniably thrilling event. And it’s evident that Frank Grillo himself shares our excitement about this possibility, as he expresses his own sense of wonder in a clip from the interview mentioned earlier:
The level of talent on display in that clip is nothing short of incredible. It goes without saying that there’s a reason why the Firefly alum is among the industry’s most sought-after voice actors. Still, the sight of him switching voices so seamlessly is just too wild not to geek out over.
The details revealed about DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters suggest it isn’t a complete overhaul of the DCEU that breaks away from the previous phase. Instead, it seems to be a strategic refresh, enabling James Gunn and his team to imprint their unique style onto the universe, while still featuring some characters as central figures or alternate reality spin-offs in an Elseworlds fashion.
Just as James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, utilizes Frank Grillo for Rick Flag Sr. in the live-action Superman cast, he carries a similar approach towards the future of Creature Commandos. Notably, this continuous casting has also found its way into the animated division of DC Studios, with Alan Tudyk being assigned another wicked role.
Eagerly expressing his enthusiasm, the actor from Moana 2 couldn’t help but share additional comments about how thrilled he was just at the thought of it.
It’s the same character. That’s what’s great, what’s really cool about DC. I get to play the actual same character two completely different ways, and I like them both. It’s really nice that James let me play Clayface, I was so happy. I didn’t even have to ask, I was going to ask when I saw it in there.
Given Alan Tudyk’s talent for adapting his voice to suit diverse characters from multiple species, personalities, and franchises, it comes as no surprise that he was an obvious choice to continue as Clayface. In essence, replacing M when you have Judi Dench delivering such a compelling performance, as seen even in a reboot like “Casino Royale,” is simply not done.
James Gunn’s understanding of this concept has me even more excited to see how he employs this approach in the future, especially if any of the Creature Commandos team members cross over into live-action. As for the animated versions of these anti-heroes, the’y’ll be settling into their new streaming digs for anyone with a Max subscription, starting on December 5. Weekly drops will occur until January 9, 2025; so be sure to keep your subscription active if you’re looking to stay current on the action ahead.
