David Spade and Theo Von Are Making a Buddy Comedy

As someone who has grown up watching the hilarious antics of David Spade during the golden age of SNL and appreciating Theo Von’s podcasting prowess, I am beyond excited about their upcoming collaboration on “Busboys.

Occasionally, if you want a task accomplished, you must take charge yourself. And because Hollywood seems to have lost its knack for creating comedies, longtime dry wit performer David Spade and podcast mogul Theo Von have teamed up to breathe life into a neglected genre. Their venture, titled “Busboys“, was penned, produced, and self-funded by the duo comedians, with filming set to begin early next year. Spade recently chatted with Deadline, discussing the project:

“We are looking forward to gracing everyone with this comedy that no one asked for.”

The main details of the plot are still unclear, but in a nutshell, the movie takes place in a small town in Arizona. Two friends, portrayed by Spade and Von, believe that working as waiters will solve all their issues. However, this basic premise leaves much to be imagined in terms of the story’s progression and overall narrative. Given Spade’s extensive writing and acting career, it is likely that there will be more depth to the plotline as revealed in the logline we have received.

The Men Behind The Madness

Born during the acclaimed second golden era of Saturday Night Live that Gen X adores, Spade joined forces with Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, and Norm Macdonald, forming the infamous “Bad Boys” group. Following his time in sketch comedy, Spade has been honored with four Emmy Award nominations and continues to amuse us with immature masterpieces like Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star and Joe Dirt. Although these films might not be essential for a Liberal Arts Degree, they deliver hefty doses of humor and top-notch physical gags – the cigarette ash scene in Joe Dirt’s gator encounter is still hilarious. Spade has been consistently producing new content, including movies on Netflix like The Wrong Missy, which he claims is keeping traditional comedy alive and well.

On the contrary, Theo Von has explosively entered the podcast scene, transforming a moderate comedy career into a powerful podcast empire with his show “This Past Weekend“, currently ranked as the third most popular comedy podcast in the US. Swapping out a Shure SM57 for an SM7b (a change tech-savvy people will understand), Von has conducted both high-profile and low-key interviews, now boasting the resources to produce his own projects. Although his stand-up specials are sparse on carefully crafted jokes and abundant in stories and controversial themes like xenophobia, sexism, and light racism, he has attracted a podcast audience who resonate with his freewheeling narrative style.

Given Spade’s proven comedic background and Von’s knack for appealing to a younger demographic, their collaboration is expected to result in something absurd, exaggerated, and vulgar. Whether the public truly desires this or Spade’s prediction turns out to be accurate remains to be seen.
