As a fan who has been captivated by the hauntingly beautiful world of the Alien franchise for decades, I must say that Aileen Wu’s portrayal of Navarro in Alien: Romulus was nothing short of mesmerizing. Her character’s journey, which seemed to be primarily driven by her loyalty towards her fellow crew members, took on a whole new dimension when Wu shared insights into Navarro’s personal life.
Aileen Wu plays a pivotal role in one of the most distressing and gruesome scenes in the ‘Alien: Romulus’ film, which ranks among the most harrowing in the entire ‘Alien’ series. However, her character, Navarro, is also present in one of the movie’s most poignant, although brief, emotional moments that takes place in 2024.
Prior to the Hulu premiere of “Alien: Romulus” set for November 2024, we had an intriguing discussion with Wu about one of the most terrifying films of the year. During this conversation, the topic veered towards a scene early in the movie where Navarro is calmly basking in sunlight, inspecting Weyland-Yutani cryo-pods. Her response sheds a fresh perspective on the character and the scene itself:
Navarro was raised by her biological mom until very young, at which point her mom had to part ways with her. Unfortunately, Navarro doesn’t know where her mother is now or even if she’s still alive. Despite the uncertainty, it seems as though certain traits – such as her native language, her distinctive ring, and her profound faith – were inherited from her mother, as these qualities are evident throughout the film.
While viewers can easily discern the reasons for characters departing from the hazardous mines on Jackson’s Star colony and perceive them as a close-knit unit resembling more family than acquaintances, the intricacies of Navarro were not fully revealed through just watching the film.
Wu shared insights about the continuous evolution on set, revealing that herself and fellow cast and crew members were consistently refining their ideas and creating diverse backstories. She expressed that Navarro’s tragic space voyage represented not just an opportunity for her friends to build a better future, but also a quest for her to locate her mother.
It seems to me that Navarro may be expressing a willingness to help others, but beneath the surface, it might also serve as an opportunity for her to reconnect with her mother. This could potentially provide a bond through their shared blood and genetic makeup.
However, the personal touch doesn’t stop there. Earlier in our conversation, Wu shared with us that the scene where she gazes contentedly at the sunlight and hopes for a brighter tomorrow was the final one she filmed on her last working day. Interestingly, she also mentioned that this specific moment was something they had talked about extensively with director Fede Álvarez on that very day.
Previously, Álvarez shared with us that he finds it “strangely manipulative” to make us fall in love with his characters, and now that I’ve seen it, everything aligns perfectly.
If you weren’t able to catch the movie “Alien: Romulus” in theaters during its blockbuster run this past summer, you can stream it with a Hulu subscription or buy a digital version from online stores. Alternatively, you can wait until December 3, 2024, when it will be released on 4K, Blu-Ray, and yes, VHS for those who prefer the classic format.
