As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has followed the evolution of these iconic characters since their humble beginnings, I must say that Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” was an absolute delight. The cameos from beloved actors, coupled with the introduction of new faces, created a perfect blend that truly encapsulated the spirit of Marvel.
The Marvel Universe is famed for consistently rolling out fresh content, either in theaters or on Disney+. The most recent cinema release was Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool & Wolverine”, a blockbuster that smashed box office records and boasted numerous guest appearances. Following his absence from “Deadpool 3”, the actor who played Azazel in “X-Men: First Class” shared his reasons for not returning.
The appearances of Deadpool and Wolverine significantly enhanced the overall experience, as several actors from Fox’s Marvel series made a farewell appearance. However, there were also new faces in some roles due to The Void being brimming with variants. Interestingly, Jason Flemyng, known for his role in X-Men: First Class, was offered the part of Azazel who can teleport. However, he declined as the role primarily consisted of action sequences and he felt it wasn’t necessary to reprise the character. In Flemyng’s own words: “Since the role mainly focused on action scenes, I didn’t feel compelled to come back.
The same opportunity presented itself to us. We were offered a three-day fight scene followed by two days of makeup tests. Essentially, they wanted us to act as stunt performers. To be honest, if I needed some quick cash, I would’ve taken it. But at the time, I didn’t need the money, so I decided to let a professional stuntman handle it. It’s turned out to be beneficial for me because people often mention that they saw me in Deadpool, another major film. If I can get a few autographs at Comic-Con because of my role in Deadpool, I’m fine with that [Laughs].
Here it is: It seems as though he might agree to feature in a future Marvel film, with a desire to bring something fresh to the character that originated in First Class. Interestingly, Azazel didn’t deliver any dialogues in Deadpool 3, but instead contributed significantly to the final battle between the Resistance and Cassandra Nova’s troops.
When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and its assets, it paved the way for characters such as Deadpool and the X-Men to become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Initially, some characters were gradually introduced, but Deadpool and Wolverine brought a multitude of these characters together for a thrilling cross-universe escapade.
In numerous aspects, the third Deadpool film seemed to pay homage to the actors and technicians who had breathed life into Fox’s Marvel series throughout the years. Unlike its predecessors, the credits scene of Deadpool 3 didn’t hint at the future of the MCU, instead opting for a heartwarming montage that showcased moments from projects such as X-Men, Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider, Blade, Daredevil, and others.
Jason Flemyng opted not to join the cast of the “Deadpool & Wolverine” movie, but his character found a way to be recognized through the Void sequences. It was heartening to see that the “First Class” X-Men film series, which launched four movies, received its due recognition.
