As a long-time SNL fan with over four decades of laughs under my belt, I must say that this year’s election season was nothing short of spectacular. Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg returning to play Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, brought back memories of their hilarious skits from the past. And let me tell you, Dana Carvey nailing Joe Biden once again was a true delight!
On this year’s Election Season, Saturday Night Live went all out! Maya Rudolph reprised her role as Kamala Harris, joined by fellow cast member Andy Samberg portraying Doug Emhoff, her husband. To add to the excitement, Dana Carvey made a comeback, delivering an uncanny Joe Biden, and even took on other characters such as Elon Musk. Now, Carvey is opening up about his performance as the tech tycoon, and one of his remarks might strike a chord with Musk himself.
In the segment airing after the election, Saturday Night Live began by playfully endorsing former President Trump’s re-election. As the skit neared its conclusion, Dana Carvey made an appearance as Elon Musk, donning his trademark blazer, ironic T-shirt beneath, and a MAGA hat. He energetically leaped across the stage, mimicking Musk’s rally behavior and using his distinctive voice. Later on their Superfly podcast, Carvey explained that maintaining an accurate impression of Musk is quite difficult due to the reasons he mentioned.
I don’t mimic Elon Musk’s speech particularly well. However, I can create something unique that doesn’t resemble any specific accent. His accent is quite distinctive, having been shaped by his upbringing in South Africa, Canada, and Pennsylvania. There seems to be a hint of both Australian and British influences, but it’s not entirely like either of those.
Because Elon Musk has resided in numerous locations throughout his life, his speech accent is a blend of several distinct regions, giving him a truly unique voice. Born in South Africa, Musk also spent a significant portion of his life in the United States due to his parents’ origins in other areas. The actor from Wayne’s World, appreciating the singularity of Musk’s speaking style and calling it “remarkable,” would likely be a compliment to the renowned billionaire, and they might find further common ground on this topic.
According to the “Master of Disguise” actor, he found it difficult to portray a businessman like Elon Musk convincingly, and Musk himself didn’t appreciate Carvey’s imitation of him. In Musk’s opinion, Dana Carvey simply sounded like his usual self. Later on social media, the Space X founder criticized a late-night show for featuring Kamala Harris in a pre-election episode. This might suggest that Musk may not be very impressed with Carvey’s impersonation either.
Over the years, there have been disagreements between the NBC stalwart (NBC being implied) and Elon Musk, as exemplified by recent events. Bowen Yang, one of the series cast members, stated that a guest host caused some cast members to cry. Later, Chloe Fineman revealed that it was Elon Musk who made her cry when he hosted in 2021. Musk did not dispute the claim and instead suggested that the material he was working with during his hosting stint wasn’t amusing at the time.
Regardless of the debate over Dana Carvey’s impression, many viewers appear to have found it amusing, as indicated by their social media responses. Although some might argue that the accent wasn’t perfectly accurate, it seems clear that Carvey was aiming for a specific character. With Elon Musk recently expressing his thoughts on the matter, one can’t help but speculate if Tesla’s CEO will choose to comment.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say: “Catch Dana Carvey’s portrayal of Elon Musk again by streaming Saturday Night Live’s post-election special, available now with Peacock subscription. This late-night classic is inviting back beloved cast members and lining up fantastic hosts and musicians for its 50th anniversary run. Don’t forget to tune in on NBC every Saturday at 11:30 p.m. ET!
