‘It’s Like, How Can You Leave?’ Candace Cameron Bure Opens Up About Her Hallmark Exit And What She Loves About Working For GAF

As a long-time fan of heartwarming Christmas movies, I have to admit that I’ve been following the careers of Candace Cameron Bure and Danica McKellar with great interest. Their recent moves from Hallmark to Great American Family have sparked a lot of conversations among fans like me.

The holiday movie season for 2024 is in full swing, as networks like Hallmark, Netflix, and Great American Family are all releasing their own romantic comedies as part of the broader TV lineup. Some actors have made surprising appearances elsewhere – Lacey Chabert on Netflix, for example, and Jen Lilley on Hulu’s movie schedule. Many actors are reflecting on the networks they’ve chosen to work with, and discussing their reasons. Candace Cameron Bure is contemplating her career decisions, including her high-profile departure from Hallmark in 2022, and she shared her reasons for enjoying working at Great American Family.

A number of actors previously associated with Hallmark switched to Great American Family a few years back, but Candace Cameron Bure’s departure generated particularly significant attention. In an interview with US Weekly, she discussed her reasons for parting ways with Hallmark, and it appears the decision wasn’t an easy one. As a cast member from “Full House,” she expressed:

For such a long time, Hallmark has been cherished, and I took great pleasure in working there. It’s almost like asking, “How do you move on?” But the truth is, life evolves and circumstances shift, opening up fresh opportunities. I’m excited about establishing a new circle of connections that align more closely with my personal values and aspirations.

It appears that Candace Cameron Bure’s religious beliefs significantly influenced her decision, along with the prospect of career progression as GAF’s chief creative officer. She is, in fact, much more than just an actress, and this role presented an opportunity to expand at a network that aligned with her personal values of emphasizing faith and family. Interestingly, she continues to find joy in her work with Great American Family, as she herself stated.

I love that we are bringing stories of faith. We have ones that aren’t about faith and more in the traditional rom-com space, but our viewers really want messages that are more meaningful. We know the reason we celebrate Christmas is because of the birth of Christ. I’ve made tons of [movies] that don’t ever mention the real meaning of Christmas. So just the fact that we mention God or there’s a scripture or there’s a biblical message that might be a proverb, someone might hear it and go, ‘Oh, that’s really good advice.’ They might not realize it comes from the Bible, but we love putting that in the movies.

During the holiday season, it’s not just Candace Cameron Bure who is contemplating her career paths. Danica McKellar, once a prominent figure at Hallmark, expresses gratitude towards Great American Media CEO Bill Abbott for giving her increased creative control in her films and allowing her to incorporate her faith into them.

The Christmas Ball inspired by Cinderella, airing as part of Danica McKellar’s lineup, will debut at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, November 29th. Meanwhile, Candace Cameron Bure’s A Christmas Less Traveled aired on November 16th, and she will next team up with fellow Hallmark veteran Cameron Mathison in Home Sweet Christmas, which is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, December 1st, on Great American Family.
