As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for virtual wineries and architectural masterpieces alike, I must say that my heart skipped a beat upon laying eyes on the Red Barn Winery at Jagged Rock. Hailing from the verdant hills of Tuscany in my favorite game, this real-life counterpart has managed to transport me straight into the heart of British Columbia’s wine country.
Nestled in Westbank, British Columbia, the Red Barn Winery at Jagged Rock has experienced a stunning metamorphosis. Once serving as a simple agricultural storage building with a small private tasting area, this emblematic red barn is now reborn as a bustling hospitality hotspot.
The distinctive red facade of the barn stands out among the vineyards, yet humbly preserves its understated appearance. Extensive glass panels foster a captivating bond with the scenic environment. A meandering pathway through the vineyards builds excitement as it leads to the entrance.
Under the guidance of Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, and Design Principal from Olson Kundig, the renovation significantly improved the building’s practicality by adding elements such as a stairway, an elevator, and mechanical updates, all the while maintaining its rural character and agricultural legacy.
On one side of the upper level stands a spacious production facility with double-height ceilings, boasting striking purple storage tanks and unique “egg” fermenters made of concrete. The space is filled with ample windows and garage doors, allowing sunlight to stream in along with stunning vineyard vistas. Across from it, a welcoming visitor center encourages guests to witness the winemaking procedure. Above this setup, a tasting room enclosed by glass walls—referred to as the “jewel box”—offers an elegant venue for events, accompanied by a cozy hospitality area that provides adaptable seating and breathtaking views.
Inside, we have a harmonious blend of warm wooden floors and wall panels, coupled with neutral plaster finishes and white surfaces. To add pops of color, strategic expansions of red steel cladding from the exterior are incorporated into the hospitality areas. Outside, a pergola and water feature create social zones, while rows of grapevines lead towards the building, highlighting the relationship between architecture and the land.
The Red Barn Winery showcases careful planning, with each feature adding to the story of wine production. Here, tradition intertwines seamlessly with innovation as grape to glass becomes an engaging experience.
