Mikey Madison Reveals How She Went All Out for Quentin Tarantino Audition

As a cinephile with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must admit that Mikey Madison has captured my heart and left me in awe. Her latest performance as Anora in Sean Baker’s masterpiece is nothing short of breathtaking, a true testament to her raw talent and ability to fully immerse herself into a character.

Since May 2024, Mikey Madison has been a hot topic in town following the release of her movie “Anora” at the Cannes Film Festival, where it bagged the prestigious Palme d’Or. In Sean Baker’s film, she takes on the lead role, and her acting has garnered overwhelming praise from critics. Consequently, whispers about Oscar nominations for Madison are growing louder. She brilliantly portrays a Brooklyn sex worker who falls for Ivan, the playboy son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn).

Initially, the young performer gained significant recognition when she portrayed Susan “Sadie” Atkins, a member of the Manson Family and one of Sharon Tate’s murderers, in Quentin Tarantino‘s movie titled Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. In a conversation with Jimmy Kimmel (as reported by Bleeding Cool), Madison discussed her process for landing the role. She admitted that during the audition, she delivered an over-the-top performance and gave it her maximum effort.

“[Tarantino is] my absolute hero. He’s one of the reasons I wanted to be an actress. I got this audition, I think I was like 19 years old, and I was like, this is my one opportunity to meet Quentin Tarantino, so I’m just gonna go all out. I did a lot of research into the Manson Family, and I found out that they would take a lot of acid trips together, so I painted this painting like my character was on this wild acid trip, and I wrote a very dramatic poem to Charles Manson on the back.

As a devoted fan, I snipped off a lock of my hair, sewed it skillfully, and presented it dramatically to Quentin. His reaction was nothing short of thrilling, leading me to believe that I had secured the role. Walking into the chemistry read, there it was – hanging in his office, my token of dedication.

Supporters of Madison’s acting prowess won’t fail to highlight her role in the 2022 film “Scream” as another impressive milestone. In the part of Amber Freeman, who is unveiled as one of the killers, Madison demonstrated a remarkable ability to switch between a seemingly innocent victim and a psychotic murderer seamlessly. The revelation that Amber is Ghostface is one of the franchise’s most effective twists, and this impact is largely thanks to Madison’s powerful performance in the shocking scene.

In the theater, seated beside my wife and producer Samantha Quan, I turned to her and expressed, “As soon as we exit this theater, we’ll contact Mikey’s representatives. The performances I just witnessed in those two roles have shown me that she has everything necessary for [‘Anora’].
