As a long-time admirer of Jewel’s multi-faceted talents, I am absolutely thrilled to see her lend her voice and artistry to such a noble cause as Sean Penn’s CORE fundraiser gala at Art Basel Miami Beach. It’s not every day you witness an artist who can captivate audiences with her music, touch hearts through her philanthropy, and inspire minds with her innovative art installations, all while making a tangible difference in the lives of those most in need.
Jewel has been tapped perform at Sean Penn‘s CORE fundraiser gala at Art Basel Miami Beach.
On December 5th, the CORE Miami Art Basel Gala is scheduled to take place at Soho Beach House. This year’s gala committee, who will share co-chairing duties, consists of Jon Bon Jovi, Jorge Perez, Jared Leto, Alessandra Ambrosio, Diplo, Garcelle Beauvais, and Soleil Moon Frye.
CORE, also known as the Community Organized Relief Effort, is a global humanitarian group founded by Penn and Ann Lee with a mission to strengthen communities that are underprivileged, particularly during times of crisis. The organization’s initiatives primarily revolve around emergency aid and readiness, tackling climate change issues, and ensuring healthcare accessibility.
CORE has taken action in addressing natural disasters, conflicts, food shortages, disease epidemics, climate change, and public health crises across five continents. At present, their primary efforts are directed towards ongoing humanitarian aid in Ukraine and Sudan during times of intense conflict, as well as disaster response and preparedness initiatives in the Caribbean and along the eastern coast of the United States.
Jewel, who’s been friends with Penn for years, also has been a longstanding supporter of CORE.
She expressed that CORE’s work, initially started in Haiti and then extended to various other communities, has always been a source of inspiration for her. During the pandemic, she encountered CORE’s CEO Ann Lee in the Navajo Nation while working with her Inspiring Children Foundation on domestic abuse support programs. This encounter in the Navajo Nation opened up a chance for them to assist each other’s projects, which are all centered around uplifting communities, especially the most at-risk populations.
Jewel eagerly took up the opportunity to perform at the fundraiser when Lee brought it up in conversation. (The Hollywood Reporter serves as the media partner for this year’s gala.)
She expressed her passion for inspiring attendees at charity events to donate to organizations like CORE, mentioning that she feels privileged to be involved in this unique occasion celebrating and boosting CORE’s efforts. She emphasized that the essence of CORE’s purpose is community, which involves uplifting marginalized populations and equipping them with the tools to conquer hardships and rebuild even stronger. This emphasis on cultivating resilience strikes a chord with her, as it mirrors the goals of her own program, Never Broken, that offers crucial resources for children and families across various economic backgrounds, promoting their advancement and development. CORE’s work in Haiti, Ukraine, and other regions, supporting children, plays a significant role in fostering strong communities.
The annual CORE gala usually attracts prominent art collectors and key figures within the art and design sector. At this event, CORE’s leading benefactors, philanthropists, artists, celebrities, and influencers collaborate to generate funds for their cause. This exciting gathering offers cocktails by the sea, a lavish dinner, a live auction, musical performances, and more.
Jewel herself also has a passion for art and has had public showings of her works.
The Grammy-nominated musician and advocate shared that her educational focus lies in marble sculpting and sketching. She’s recently showcased a diverse exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, presenting an assortment of pieces such as an oil painting, a sculpture, a holographic video, and drone-created sky art.
She’s in the midst of completing a new work, titled Heart of the Ocean, which she says blends sculpture, technology and neuroscience. She describes it as an eight-foot-tall clear resin chrysalis embedded with fiber optic cables.
She explained that this distinctive sculpture will broadcast open-source oceanic data from a built-in computer, making the ocean influence the artwork. This interactive feature is intended to deliver a multi-sensory experience, imitating a ‘great outdoors’ sensation within an indoor setting. A study in neuroscience found that interacting with this piece stimulates Alpha and Theta brainwaves, which are often linked to meditative or dreamlike states.
In 2024, CORE Miami will honor the esteemed lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, who holds a partnership at Greenberg Traurig LLP and additionally functions as CORE’s external legal advisor.
This is the fourth time CORE has held a fundraising gala associated with Art Basel. These events are known for attracting an illustrious guest list, with previous attendees such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jared Leto, Diplo, Tobey Maguire, Bella Hadid, and many more notable figures. The entertainment at these galas has included performances by Anitta and Wyclef Jean.
