- Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent will see operations transfered to NetEase
- Fortunately, you shouldn’t see much change as switchover of save data and progress is included
- Fans can rest easy for now, but does this signal a step back from mobile for Square Enix?
As a seasoned gamer who’s seen the rise and fall of many gaming giants, I must say the recent developments with Square Enix have left me both intrigued and a tad concerned. The transfer of operations for Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent to NetEase seems like a smart move, considering the seamless save data transfer and progress inclusion. But, it’s hard not to wonder if this signals a step back from mobile for Square Enix.
Despite numerous shutdowns and endings happening this year with some of the latest releases, fans of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent can breathe a sigh of relief as its mobile spin-off is not among them. However, it seems Square Enix might be planning to pass management responsibilities to NetEase starting in January next year, which could suggest they’re scaling back their involvement in mobile gaming.
Remember, we discussed earlier this week about Square Enix releasing an official mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV (14). In a recent conversation, it’s been pointed out that the readiness of Lightspeed Studios, a Tencent subsidiary, played a significant role in making the port possible.
With Octopath Traveler now being managed by NetEase for its mobile version, enabling players to transition their saved game data and progress seamlessly during the changeover, and the assignment of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile to another developer, this situation prompts a question about Square Enix’s current stance on mobile gaming.
They call me the wanderer
It seems that signs pointed towards Square Enix reducing their focus on mobile games as early as 2022, with the shutdown of Square Enix Montreal, a studio known for creating popular games such as Hitman GO and Deus Ex GO. Although it’s reassuring to learn that some games will continue to be released despite this strategic change, it’s regrettable that such a move is necessary at all, particularly when there appears to be substantial enthusiasm among fans for Square Enix mobile games, as evidenced by the high interest in Final Fantasy XIV on mobile.
Instead of questioning whether it’s reasonable, you might consider it an excellent opportunity to explore. If you’re looking for something engaging during the wait, perhaps delving into our collection of the 25 finest Role-Playing Games (RPGs) for Android would be a good choice?
