As a longtime fan and TV Editor at TopMob who has watched Outlander since its inception, it’s bittersweet to see the series nearing its end with Season 8. The show has been a constant companion for years, and I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as we march towards the finale.
I’m still finding it challenging to fully comprehend the ending of Outlander. As a longstanding fan, it’s held a special place on my TV screen since my days as a TV Editor here at TopMob, and now that Outlander Season 7 Part 2 has been scheduled for 2024, there are still many episodes left before the story comes to an end with Season 8. As we inch closer to the final act, members of the long-standing Starz series might be willing to discuss the ongoing speculation about a potential spinoff related to the show.
For quite some time now, discussions have circulated among fans regarding a separate series centered around the beloved figure, Lord John, from the show “Outlander”. As far back as during the Covid-19 pandemic, the showrunner, Matthew B. Roberts, hinted at the possibility of such a spinoff. Recently, David Berry, the actor portraying the character on screen, has expressed his thoughts about the prospect of further stories involving “Outlander’s” charming LGBTQ+ figure. In an interview with TV Insider, he shared:
For some time now, there’s been talk about a Lord John series. If it ever materializes and I get the chance, I would jump at the opportunity to further develop this character. There are still untold stories and layers to his personality that need exploring. Perhaps by giving him his own platform, audiences might appreciate him more as an independent character, potentially leading to a spin-off series focusing on Lord John himself.
Interestingly, as we move into Season 7B, fans can expect Lord John Grey to step more independently than before, offering a fresh take on his character that hasn’t been seen on TV thus far. If things go smoothly, this development could provide a tantalizing glimpse of what a Lord John spinoff series might offer. It’s evident that Berry would be open to the idea should the network propose such an opportunity to him.
In the world of Outlander, instead of shrinking, it continues to grow beyond the conclusion of Claire and Jamie’s romantic tale. The forthcoming prequel titled Outlander: Blood of my Blood is anticipated to delve into the love stories of Jamie and Claire’s parents, promising more epic romance. Once again, Ronald D. Moore will serve as showrunner, while Diana Gabaldon will lend her expertise in a consulting producer role for this new venture.
In Diana Gabaldon’s fictional universe, why did “Blood Of My Blood” get developed ahead of a John Grey series? The network hasn’t explicitly stated, but it seems likely that the prequel will maintain a tonal similarity with the original series rather than a Lord John Grey prequel. This is because the former is based on the main series, while the latter consists of mystery novellas featuring the charismatic character, and I speculate about Sam Heughan’s thoughts regarding rejoining the franchise so soon after concluding his own lengthy series, given that some Lord Grey novellas also feature Jamie Frasier.
Still, it’s a great idea for a show — likely even a better idea than the aforementioned prequel — and I hope it gets the chance to happen.
With Season 7 Part 2 now available, it was recently confirmed by Heughan and the cast that filming for Outlander has come to an end on set. The conclusion is near, and while I suspect this show won’t fade away quietly, I’m happy that Starz already has ideas for additional tales to share. Here’s hoping a Lord Grey season will be included in their future plans…
