As a long-time Square Enix fan with a soft spot for their iconic storytelling and artistic flair, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy as I watch Japan get ready to welcome Emberstoria on November 27th. This mobile strategy RPG, set in the world of Purgatory where ancient warriors known as Embers are resurrected to fight monsters, seems like a dream come true for any Square Enix aficionado.
Fans of Square Enix will be green with envy as they watch Japan, since a new mobile game exclusive to the region is being released in stores on November 27th. This highly anticipated title, Emberstoria, can now be pre-downloaded. As previously mentioned, Emberstoria is set in the world of Purgatory, where ancient warriors known as Embers are brought back to life to combat the monsters endangering the planet.
In a pleasant manner, this game embodies traditional Square Enix style, featuring a grand, emotional, and somewhat theatrical narrative and visual flair, along with beautiful artwork. You’ll gather various Embers, construct your own floating city known as Anima Arca, and immerse yourself in an engaging story told by more than 40 voice actors. Although it hasn’t been announced for a western release just yet, the excitement is certainly building for when it does arrive.
While I do hold a somewhat moderated viewpoint, let me remind you that earlier today, I mentioned that Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent was moving its operations to Netease. In my opinion, this move by Square Enix could possibly indicate a reduction in their mobile game involvement.

Well, I wouldn’t say that. But I do think this could indicate what Square is up to in the near future, and Emberstoria is one to keep an eye on. Maybe it’ll remain Japan-exclusive, or maybe it’ll come to us courtesy of NetEase? Either way, I don’t reckon a global release will be straightforward, but not impossible either, and how it comes about could tell us a lot about what Square Enix is up to on mobile in future.
