As a long-time fan of Jude Law and romantic comedies, I must say that his recent revelation about the non-existence of the iconic cottage in “The Holiday” has left me both heartbroken and amused. I’ve watched this movie countless times during the holiday season, dreaming of spending a cozy winter evening in that picturesque cottage, sipping hot cocoa, and falling in love just like Iris and Graham did.
Jude Law has arrived to break your hearts before the holidays start. The Hollywood actor, famously best known for films like The Talented Mr. Ripley, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, and Sherlock Holmes, just revealed that one of the most iconic locations in cinema history doesn’t really exist, and you should stop trying to find it on Airbnb. Yes, we’re talking about the cozy cottage in Nancy Meyers’ 2006 rom-com The Holiday. Dreams: crushed.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jude Law recently discussed the beloved modern Christmas film on BBC Radio. When asked about the cottage featured in the movie, and if it was possible to rent it through Airbnb, Law revealed a surprising fact: “That cottage doesn’t exist.” This news has left many disappointed fans reeling. Later, Law explained that director Adam Shankman had difficulty finding the perfect location for the cottage, and he made another intriguing disclosure: Meyers, who is known for his films showcasing breathtaking homes and interiors, admitted to struggling to find a suitable location for the cottage in question.
The director, being particular about details, hadn’t quite found the quaint chocolate-box cottage she desired after exploring the entire region. Instead, she rented a field, sketched her ideal design, and commissioned its construction.
However, this fact is intriguing – when filmed on location, I’d enter through that door, but each time, production paused, and the indoor scenes were actually filmed in Los Angeles around three months later.
Law chuckled and popped the suspense, apologetically. The hosts couldn’t hide their letdown upon learning about the actor’s disclosure regarding the cherished Christmas movie. Much like how fans felt when they discovered that Good Will Hunting wasn’t filmed at Harvard but at a Toronto university, or that the grand mansion in Crimson Peak was constructed from scratch, too.
‘The Holiday’ is a Vastly Underrated Christmas Movie

In the movie titled “The Holiday“, Law shares screen time with Cameron Diaz, Jack Black, and Kate Winslet. This 2006 film narrates the tale of two women: Iris from Surrey (portrayed by Winslet) and Amanda from Los Angeles (Diaz). After going through heartbreaks, they both decide to exchange homes for the holiday season, hoping a change in environment would aid their healing. While Iris enjoys her time basking in sunny California, Amanda’s experience in Surrey is not as pleasant.
Over time, they cross paths with Graham (Law) and Miles (Black) separately, and in typical rom-com fashion, they both find themselves falling in love. Nancy Meyers, a genius when it comes to romantic comedies, spins an enchanting tale using her witty dialogue and captivating characters. The movie, The Holiday, is no exception, offering a warm, unconventional take on holiday movies. It’s a testament that these films can be more than just simple narratives; they can also be visually rich, skillfully acted, and most importantly, relatable given the circumstances. And let’s not forget the fantastic score by Hans Zimmer!
Despite some less-than-favorable reviews, I find myself consistently drawn to this film as a go-to choice for holiday viewing. Initially, it garnered more than $200 million at the box office, yet the production costs were surprisingly high. Granted, the exorbitant paychecks for the actors might have played a role in that, but I can’t help but assume the picturesque cottage was a significant contributor to the overall expense.
