We've Reached The Era Where Mark Ruffalo Is Trolling The 'Holding Space' For Defying Gravity Meme, And I Am Here For It

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen it all, from epic battles in the realm of Azeroth to the dystopian wastelands of Rapture, I can confidently say that the current viral wave sweeping social media is as captivating as any boss fight or puzzle I’ve encountered. The Wicked meme saga, spearheaded by the emotional interviews and the ‘holding space’ exchange between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has undeniably taken over the digital battlefield.

The musical film “Wicked” is currently playing in cinemas and making a big impact at the box office, after a lengthy publicity campaign. The cast of “Wicked” has been working hard to promote the movie, and their efforts have paid off with several viral moments online. Notably, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo often become emotional during interviews. Nowadays, Mark Ruffalo is playing along with the “Mark Ruffalo in the ‘holding space’ for ‘Defying Gravity‘” meme, which I find quite entertaining.

Wicked‘s songs are a big draw of the film, especially well-known tracks like “Popular” and “Defying Gravity”. The latter went viral recently when a journalist spoke to Erivo about LGBTQ+ fans “holding space” for those lyrics and finding strength in their power. That clip has been memed countless times in the last week, and now Mark Ruffalo is getting in on the fun over on his personal Instagram.

It’s quite amusing, really! Mark Ruffalo has a history of teasing his Marvel Cinematic Universe pals for years, and now he’s jumping on the viral “Wicked” bandwagon. We’ll have to wait and see if Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo will join in the fun.

Mark Ruffalo chose to adapt the “holding space” meme with clips from his character in the streaming series “Poor Things” (available on Hulu). However, it seems there was a missed chance as the meme could have been more fitting for his iconic Hulk persona. Given his and Elphaba’s widespread popularity as green characters in media, it would have made an intriguing twist.

Mark Ruffalo is recognized for his charming demeanor on social platforms, and infamously for leaking spoilers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Therefore, it’s not surprising that he jumped into the ongoing Wicked meme trending across various social media platforms.

As a reminder, you can see the viral clip from Wicked‘s promotional tour below. Check it out:

This conversation rapidly gained popularity for several causes. Firstly, the references to “creating space” left some people puzzled. Secondly, Cynthia Erivo’s emotional response was noteworthy. However, it is arguably the way Ariana Grande grasped Cynthia Erivo’s fingers during their interaction that has been most frequently turned into memes in this interview.

There’s been some criticism online about Grande and Erivo showing intense emotions during their discussions about their collaboration on the two “Wicked” films. However, with the second movie set to release in November 2025, it appears these talented vocalists will reprise their roles and tour again in autumn. Given that the latter half of “Wicked’s” narrative is deeply emotional and tragic, I can only imagine there will be even more tears involved.
