As a lifelong fan who’s had the pleasure of growing up outside the States and being introduced to the magic of Middle Earth at an early age, I wholeheartedly stand with Paul Mescal. His admission of being more drawn to the world of Tolkien than that of superheroes resonates deeply with me, as I can easily imagine young Mescal engrossed in the pages of “The Hobbit” or “The Lord of the Rings,” just like any other comic book fan is with their favorite superhero comics.
Since his breakout role in the 2020 adaptation of Sally Rooney’s series “Normal People,” Paul Mescal has captivated hearts globally. His stardom and enduring appeal are further demonstrated by his upcoming roles in the cinematic equivalents of “Barbenheimer” (or “Wickediator”) in 2024. He even expresses enthusiasm about both projects! While it’s uncertain what lies ahead for Mescal, one thing is certain – whispers of him joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe are unfounded. The actor has expressed a preference for joining the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” over any superhero universe, and I wholeheartedly agree with him.
The 28-year-old actor joined Josh Horowitz for his podcast, Happy Sad Confused, and was asked about the rumors of him possibly joining his Gladiator II costars Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn for the 2025 Fantastic Four franchise. The All of Us Strangers star confirmed that he was never in conversation about the Marvel classic.
Later on, Horowitz asked about Mescal’s potential interest in participating in a future superhero project. In response, Mescal expressed that, being not raised with comic book hero films, the concept wasn’t as captivating to him as other franchises are. He stated: “Growing up without the influence of comic book hero movies, I find myself more drawn to other projects.
It seems those movies aren’t my cup of tea. Growing up, I wasn’t particularly attracted to them. If I hadn’t been raised on those films, I wouldn’t have been a fan. Instead, I found myself more connected to Lord of the Rings-style movies. So, they weren’t the type of films that appealed to me.
It’s understandable that someone who wasn’t raised in the U.S. might not be as drawn to the world of American superheroes. However, I can easily imagine young Mescal being captivated by J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, just as fans are with comic books… and it’s delightful! Given a choice between the two, I’d choose Tolkien’s universe every time, with occasional forays into the best superhero films. It’s refreshing to know that there are people in Hollywood championing the Hobbits and their world!

I think he’d make a magnificent addition anywhere within the fantasy franchise. It may be too late for the upcoming Lord of the Rings: War of Rohirrim, which has a December 13th release date but never say never for Season 3 of Rings of Power. That’s an incredibly hopeful guess but I’m sure he will be able to find a way into the lore. The Gladiator sequel and The History of Sound possibly premiering during our 2025 movie schedule will be enough for now.
I, along with likely numerous others, am eagerly anticipating Mescal’s involvement in any endeavor he undertakes. He currently has multiple projects underway and shows no signs of slowing down. Here’s hoping this interview sparked interest that Mescal is, indeed, a fan of “The Lord of the Rings” and would relish the opportunity to play a character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary masterpiece.
