Universal Refutes Rumor of 'Wicked' Pay Disparity Between Ariana Grande & Cynthia Erivo

As a seasoned moviegoer with a soft spot for musicals and an even softer spot for justice, I can’t help but feel relieved that Universal Pictures has set the record straight about the pay discrepancy rumors surrounding “Wicked.” It’s disheartening to see such speculation, especially when it concerns two incredibly talented actresses like Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Universal Pictures has stated that reports suggesting a pay gap between the stars of “Wicked” are entirely untrue. Controversial news items spread over the weekend claimed that Ariana Grande was paid $15 million for her role in the film adaptation, while Cynthia Erivo received only $1 million. The matter has gained significant attention, prompting the studio to address the issue publicly.

Based on information from TheWrap, who allegedly talked to a Universal spokesperson, it was stated that both leads were paid equally. However, they dismissed these reports as “entirely untrue” and “based on Internet gossip.” Despite originating from questionable sources without any substantial proof, various media outlets still chose to report on these claims, which further fueled the rumors.

Universal refutes these reports about the Wicked actresses’ pay being unequal, asserting instead that they were compensated equally for their work. These unfounded rumors haven’t affected the success of the musical, as it outperformed Gladiator II during its opening weekend and is now hailed as one of the top-reviewed musical adaptations ever made.

To the disappointment of numerous fans, Universal has chosen to divide the musical into two movies: Wicked (2024). Despite being around ten minutes longer than the original Broadway production, there’s still an entire act left to bring to life on the big screen. Remarkably, this decision doesn’t seem to have negatively impacted the first film, as reviews for Wicked have been overwhelmingly positive.

Musical movies are poised to take over cinemas as “Moana 2” and “Wicked” collaborate for one of the busiest Thanksgiving weekends at the box office in recent memory. Not only is “Wicked” experiencing financial prosperity, but it also plans to gather numerous Academy Award nominations early next year. In fact, Universal is expected to promote “Wicked” for nearly every major award category, such as Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, a myriad of technical categories, and even Best Picture.

Excitedly speaking as a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that, having been filmed consecutively, “Wicked: Part Two” will grace our screens on November 21, 2025. For those eagerly waiting to uncover the secrets of this sequel, let me tantalize you with a hint – director Jon M. Chu suggests that “Part Two” will delve into the profound themes of consequences.
