Will Fox's Murder In A Small Town Return For Season 2? Executive Producer Talks What's Next For Cassandra And Alberg After The Season 1 Finale Ending

As a seasoned gamer of crime dramas who has witnessed countless twists and turns, I must say that “Murder in a Small Town” has managed to keep me guessing right until the very end. The finale, titled “Sleep While I Sing,” was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, with the big kiss between Alberg and Cassandra leaving us all rooting for them despite their troubled pasts.

Heads up! I don’t want to ruin the excitement for you, but if you haven’t watched the Season 1 finale of Murder in a Small Town yet, brace yourself for some major spoilers. Catch it on Fox or stream it with your Hulu subscription before the surprises get spoiled!

In the autumn TV lineup of 2024, the series “Mystery in a Quiet Town” concluded its first season with a two-part finale. The characters Alberg (portrayed by Rossif Sutherland) and the police force of Alberg, led an investigation to apprehend a serial killer whose crimes reached beyond their initial expectations. The antagonist for this Fox drama’s final plotline was Tommy Cummins, played by Noah Reid from “Schitt’s Creek.” Thankfully, Alberg wrapped up the case without any harm coming to Holly (Dakota Guppy), all while Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) embarked on a personal emotional journey and made a decision regarding her upcoming plans.

In the final episode titled “Sleep While I Sing,” the main characters reconciled, steering clear of the typical “will they/won’t they” pattern. This episode was broadcast before any news about the series’ future was released by Fox. During my conversation with executive producer Jeff Wachtel regarding the finale, he provided insights on whether the show might return for a second season in the 2025 TV lineup and offered explanations on how Alberg and Cassandra’s narratives were concluded.

Alberg And Cassandra Reunite

At the end of Season 1, when the excitement had subsided and everyone could relax, Alberg and Cassandra finally had a heartfelt talk. He revealed his second daughter was visiting soon, while she shared her plans to run for town council. Gibsons had grown to be their shared sanctuary. Gently, he requested she share the events in Sacramento with him someday, and she noted that they were both deep thinkers. Emotionally, she asked what his wishes were, and without hesitation, he expressed “You.

In another way of saying it, how could the season finale have concluded differently except for them sealing their relationship with a kiss following his remark? To summarize, this episode was an exceptionally joyful end to a storyline that introduced the most notorious criminal from the entire first season. When I chatted with executive producer Jeff Wachtel regarding the episode, I inquired if the team behind “Murder in a Small Town” had ever pondered an open-ended cliffhanger instead of the heartwarming finale, and he disclosed:

We looked at every possibility. There was the possibility of the cliffhanger, and there was honestly the possibility [that they wouldn’t get back together], because she’s not kidding when she says she doesn’t want to date a cop. So we had to look at it carefully and have what we hope and believe was an organic resolution. That meant looking at it carefully and including the possibility that it was not going to work out. We looked at it from all angles, and it seemed that post-kidnapping, and then with – I thought – the legit and organic storyline of Episode 7 and 8, where they actually miss each other, they make each other smile.

In a past incident involving Alberg, Cassandra was abducted, which might have proved an impossible obstacle. However, their feelings for each other had already blossomed, and in the climax of Season 1, they decided to reunite despite this issue from their past. Wachtel added:

It appears he consulted her about the artist due to a lack of alternatives, and there might have been some personal motivation driving him. I suspect he felt compelled to pursue this matter. Given her character, she seemed resilient enough, and as we’ll discover in the second season, the event that caused her to depart Sacramento was significant and unsettling enough that being near police isn’t straightforward for her. Therefore, Cassandra needs to reassess her life path.

The mysteries surrounding Sacramento won’t remain shrouded in mystery forever, if Murder in a Small Town gets another season. Given that the finale aired without a renewal confirmed, at least viewers can appreciate the episode without fearing an unresolved life-threatening cliffhanger. Wachtel made it clear that the big kiss doesn’t automatically mean a fairy tale ending for the couple.

Kristin Kreuk is an intelligent woman who has carefully charted her life’s path and doesn’t tolerate ignorance. Therefore, we needed to consider this aspect of her character and maintain a respectful yet non-sentimental tone during our interaction, acknowledging the potential challenges that may lie ahead in our relationship.

Given that Cassandra made a humorous or partly humorous comment about police oversight when she mentioned her plans for running for town council, might there potentially be some unexpected challenges as well as another daughter joining the town and Cassandra dealing with the aftermath of events in Sacramento? Here’s hoping it will simply involve waiting to discover more once a renewal has been confirmed.

What About Season 2?

Often, a TV show’s season may conclude without immediate word on renewal or cancellation, so the absence of confirmation about Season 2 shouldn’t automatically be seen as a negative. In reality, the creative team behind the scenes is likely brainstorming ideas for future episodes, as hinted by EP Jeff Wachtel’s comments on their current planning stage.

Fox provided us funds for script development, which led to having Ian [Weir] create storyboards for the entire season. However, we haven’t completed the process yet. So far, we have the initial four episodes fully detailed with complete stories and rough drafts for the remaining episodes.

It seems that Ian Weir, the creator/EP/writer, and the team behind Murder and a Small Town have been advancing scripts for a potential second season. This progress may lead to an earlier renewal, and perhaps new episodes in 2025. After the final credits, Wachtel expressed why this crime show is unique: “This is a different kind of crime show.

This show follows a typical crime investigation format, yet today, nothing seems completely secure. Unpredictability is everywhere. Moving forward, we’re particularly eager to delve into the relationships between the characters. To our delight, the connection between Rossif and Kristin developed in a way that surpassed our expectations. We were thrilled to see their chemistry unfold because we believed that the unique aspect of this series was their relationship. Although it takes place in a beautiful setting, involves a crime, and promises resolution, the unexpected twist lies in the evolving dynamics between these two characters, leaving us on edge with anticipation.

At the moment, you have the opportunity to revisit the initial eight episodes of “Murder in a Small Town” on Hulu. Before its finale, this series has been the top-ranking new show for Fox content on Hulu and the third most popular Fox series overall during the 2024-2025 TV season thus far. What’s more, viewership of “Murder in a Small Town” increases by approximately 130% with multiplatform viewing, indicating that its audience is not confined to Fox. Here’s hoping it will be renewed for a second season!
