As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the anticipation for new characters in a game, especially one as highly-anticipated as Marvel Rivals, is always palpable. The latest teaser hinting at Black Widow’s potential inclusion has sent the fan community into a frenzy, and rightfully so!
Given that Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, and Hawkeye are all set for Marvel Rivals, fans can’t help but speculate if Black Widow might join the roster at some point.
Although the mix of characters from different parts of the well-known Marvel universe seems well-balanced, the discovery of a fresh Easter egg within the recent HYDRA base map hints at the impending announcement of Black Widow.
Is Black Widow Coming to Marvel Rivals?
As the release date of Marvel Rivals swiftly approaches, I’ve been eagerly anticipating when we gamers can finally get our hands on playable Natasha Romanoff. Just yesterday, NetEase shared a sneak peek at a new map set in a HYDRA fortress, and some keen-eyed fans have stumbled upon an Easter egg that might be hinting towards Black Widow. I can hardly wait to see what else they’ve got up their sleeves!
At 0:20 minute mark, viewers notice that the HYDRA figurehead known as Hive sports Avengers’ heads on its tentacles in the game. Some characters are more conspicuous than others, but a female face at the top-left area has sparked speculation that this could be Black Widow.
Early Black Widow Leaks
In July, Miller Ross shared a glimpse of graffiti from the Tokyo 2099 game map, which offered fans a general idea of Widow’s appearance in the game.
Indeed, the design appears to have been amplified somewhat, yet it aligns well with the style of the other characters within the game. It wouldn’t seem odd if this version of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, etc., were placed alongside their Rivals counterparts.
What could Widow’s Play Style be?
It’s plausible that Black Widow’s role in the game may emphasize her assassin past. Given her agility, she might need to move swiftly across the battlefield. However, recent graffiti leaks suggest she’ll be armed with a rifle, which is an unexpected twist.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Widow is particularly recognized for her use of twin pistols and her Widow’s Sting gauntlets. Interestingly, she has not been depicted carrying a rifle in any MCU scenes so far. However, considering her profession as an assassin, a sniper rifle could be a useful addition to her arsenal.
It’s quite appropriate that Black Widow can switch between a marksman role and close-combat fighter, but there might be criticism if the game appears overly reminiscent of Overwatch’s sniper character, Widowmaker.
Apart from Widow’s existing skills, fans might anticipate her to gain a power boost when partnered with Hawkeye. Given her comic book history with Tony Stark, it’s plausible that they could collaborate on a unique team ability as well. The dynamic between Captain America and the Winter Soldier aligns well with her character too.
Until NetEase discloses further details, fans are left with speculation. Rest assured, the game is on the horizon, and developers have limited time remaining to share unrevealed aspects – unless they plan to save a few surprises for the launch.
Marvel Rivals launches on Dec. 6 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
