As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that “Superman & Lois” has truly outdone itself this time around. The way they’ve humanized Clark Kent and his family while simultaneously delivering on iconic DC villains is nothing short of remarkable.
The CW network’s remaining DC show, “Superman & Lois,” is currently airing its final season, garnering acclaim from fans for its innovative take on the title characters. Additionally, this final season has been redesigning one of DC’s most famous villains. The series delves deeply into the human side of Clark Kent, humanizing Superman more profoundly than any other recent adaptation. Instead of emphasizing his persona as Superman, the show places a greater focus on Clark Kent and his family relationships.
In the unique narrative of “Superman & Lois,” traditional stories are reimagined, even with iconic Superman adversaries like Doomsday. For instance, Doomsday, a central figure in the “Death of Superman” tales across comics and media, undergoes a radical change in origin and appearance here. However, while the means by which Doomsday is brought to life in this show deviate significantly (starting off as a twisted version of Superman’s clone, Bizarro), the character retains his distinctive look from the comics. A clear example is the debut of his green radiation suit, mirroring his appearance in his first comic book appearance.
In the final season, this visually consistent Apocalypse has evolved even more, and the penultimate episode introduced a humorous, spot-on portrayal of the character. These recent changes in the character have sparked comparisons to the live-action version of the character from Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
‘Superman & Lois’ Improves on ‘Batman v Superman’s’ Version of Doomsday
It’s interesting to note that the origin of Doomsday, as portrayed in both the series and the movie, shares some similarities. In each adaptation, Doomsday was a resurrected form of previous Superman adversaries – General Zod in the film and Bizarro in the show. Over time, they transformed into the familiar version we know today. Fans on social media have been expressing their opinion that the portrayal of Doomsday in Superman & Lois is more accurate to the comic books and better executed within the larger storyline when compared to Zack Snyder’s version.
In just the span of a movie, Doomsday’s appearance in Batman v Superman seems hurried. On the other hand, Superman & Lois has ample room to develop its characters, making Doomsday’s appearance meaningful within the storyline. Additionally, this final season portrays a weaker Superman, gradually turning mortal, which adds significance to his fight against the monstrous creature. Regrettably, Batman v Superman didn’t achieve this, as audiences were already aware of Doomsday’s future appearance in Justice League.
User @marvelousmarc96 and @thegeneralsordi comment that The CW’s Doomsday portrayal is visually appealing and more comic-accurate, which Zack Snyder’s work could not achieve. They also criticize Dawn of Justice for having inaccuracies throughout the film, with the second half being particularly disappointing, and adding that the early reveal of Doomsday in the trailers ruined the surprise.
Some viewers argue that the depiction of Doomsday in “Superman & Lois” outshines Zack Snyder’s interpretation, but it’s hard to make a fair comparison due to the varying amounts of time dedicated to each version’s development. Impressively, however, The CW series successfully combines a moving and human-centric Superman narrative with faithful portrayals of classic villains from the Man of Steel’s rogues gallery. With Superman having already given up much to vanquish Doomsday last season, fans are eagerly awaiting to see how our hero overcomes him again, considering his current weaker state.
