'Heat 2' Screenplay is Currently Being Finished Confirms Michael Mann

As a cinephile with over three decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must confess that Michael Mann‘s work has always held a special place in my heart. From his gritty and visually stunning portrayal of crime-ridden cities to his unparalleled ability to create tension and suspense, Mann’s films have consistently left me in awe.

Michael Mann’s “Heat” continues to be a significant movie of the 1990s, and for its sequel, titled “Heat 2“, Mann chose an unconventional approach. Instead of creating it as a feature film, he collaborated with author Meg Gardiner to publish the story as a novel in August 2022. The release of “Heat 2” sparked discussions about whether it would eventually become a movie. During promotions for his latest project, “Ferrari“, in 2023, Mann hinted that he aims to transform his story into a full-fledged film.

As a dedicated fan, I haven’t received substantial news about the eagerly anticipated sequel to “Heat,” apart from casual discussions on casting and structure. However, in an engaging interview with Steve Weintraub from Collider, Mann shed some light on the project that has us all waiting. During their chat, Mann shared insights into his screenwriting process, revealing that he’s been working tirelessly on “Heat 2” late into the night.

“I’ve been working on my screenplay late into the night, and around 2:30 a.m., it inspired me so much that I couldn’t sleep. So, I found myself cruising through LA at 3 a.m., which was quite serene since there wasn’t much traffic. Eventually, I ended up at Canter’s Delicatessen because they’re open 24 hours.

‘Heat 2’ Has Michael Mann Deep in the Late-Night Creative Process

Michael Mann’s passion for portraying Los Angeles’ nightlife in his films seems to be a reflection of his creative method, as suggested by his recent statements. From “Thief” to “Heat” to “Collateral”, Mann has consistently made the city’s nightscape a significant character within his narratives. The director further discussed his writing approach and revealed the progress he made on the story for “Heat 2”, all while reflecting fondly on the previous projects he completed in a similar vein.

Later on, I found myself seated in a booth, engrossed in writing until around 9:00 this morning, striving to complete act four. It was rather ironic as this very booth was where I penned the initial episodes of ‘Starsky & Hutch’ back in the 70s. Following that, ‘The Jericho Mile’ and possibly some early versions of ‘Heat’. The waitress I favored, Jeannie, used tips from this eatery to finance her two sons’ medical school education, as well as playing poker in Gardena. [Laughs] So, while cruising through the Los Angeles streets at night, a coyote might dart across your path.

Afterward, he was careful to highlight that there’s no certainty beyond him being engaged in the scriptwriting process, and that the screenplay has secured a place within a studio.

There seems to be no definite plan since the sky could collapse, but here’s some good news: “Heat 2” is at Warner Bros., and I’m currently working on its screenplay for them. Fingers crossed, we hope to proceed as quickly as possible with this project.

Although Mann isn’t guaranteeing anything, this latest development marks the most significant change in the movie so far. If the director finalizes his script and the studio gives the green light, production for “Heat 2” could start at Warner Bros. The sequel, set before and after the original film, promises to be a thrilling addition to Mann’s cinematic portfolio.
