As someone who has grown up with the magic of Disney and Sega, I am absolutely thrilled to see these two iconic franchises, Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, competing for the spotlight this holiday season! Having fond memories of playing Sonic games as a child and being enchanted by the original Lion King, it’s like reliving my childhood all over again.
As we anticipate a strong turnout at the cinemas over Thanksgiving weekend, it’s almost surprising that the holiday-season rush in late December isn’t getting more attention. Both family-friendly films, “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3“, are now being monitored for box office performance, and they seem to be closely matched in their projected opening weekends.
According to predictions, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” could potentially debut with earnings of $55 million or more, while “Mufasa: The Lion King” might bring in around $50 million. It’s important to note that these numbers are initial estimates and may change over the coming weeks. There’s a possibility that changes could occur even sooner for “Mufasa” because it has trailers connected to the successful box office performance of Disney’s “Moana 2.” The marketing campaign for “The Lion King” prequel is set to intensify significantly on Dec. 2, following the release of four trailers already and an anticipated full-scale push.
Despite only releasing two trailers, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has been consistently expanding. The first movie, launched in 2020 just before the onslaught of the pandemic, managed to earn $58 million domestically and $148.9 million within the U.S., along with a staggering $319.7 million globally, all on a budget of $85 million. Despite being hindered by the pandemic, it still performed admirably considering the obstacles. The sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, was released in 2022 and saw its opening weekend earnings jump to $72.1 million, leading to a domestic total of $190.8 million and a global take of $405.4 million, produced on a budget of $110 million. Additionally, the Knuckles series premiered on Paramount+ prior to the third film’s release, further expanding the Sonic universe, which is beneficial for Paramount Pictures.
‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3′ Will Play Well Into the New Year
The reason for a projected opening tracking number in the $50-55 million range for both movies is primarily because we’re still quite early in the game, and marketing efforts haven’t reached their full intensity yet. For instance, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 unveiled its second trailer on Monday, which reportedly performed well across various platforms. Secondly, it’s important to remember that the Christmas season isn’t solely about a film’s opening weekend performance. These movies continue to rake in profits even after the new year, so the real focus is on their day-to-day earnings. Openings like Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million) and Avatar: The Way of Water ($134.1 million) during this time are exceptions rather than the norm, so these initial tracking figures shouldn’t be seen as underperforming since both movies are anticipated to become blockbuster hits.
Under the direction of Barry Jenkins from a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson, Mufasa: The Lion King functions as both a photorealistic prequel and sequel to the 2019 remake of the 1994 film The Lion King, earning over $1.6 billion globally during its cinematic release. In this movie, Rafiki (John Kani) narrates the backstory of Mufasa (Aaron Pierre) and Taka (Kelvin Harrison Jr.), who eventually becomes known as Scar. This narrative is shared with Kiara (Blue Ivy Carter), the granddaughter of Mufasa and daughter of Simba (Donald Glover) and Nala (Beyoncé Knowles Carter). The tale unfolds when Mufasa was an orphan who befriended Taka, who was later adopted by Taka’s family. As the two grew incredibly close, the story will also explore how their bond fractured and how Prince Taka came to envy his new sibling. The film boasts the voice talents of Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Tiffany Boone, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, and Anika Noni Rose.
In the sequel titled Sonic the Hedgehog 3, directed by Jeff Fowler from a script penned by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington, our beloved Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and companions encounter a fresh adversary named Shadow (Keanu Reeves). This new foe poses such a grave danger that Sonic and his allies must enlist the aid of the infamous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), previously an enemy, to counteract the menace. The film also boasts the talents of Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, and Krysten Ritter.
