Keke Palmer Was “Speechless” When She Met Mariska Hargitay on the Set of ‘SVU’: “I Forgot How to Act”

As a gamer who has lived through multiple lifetimes of gaming experiences, I can wholeheartedly say that Keke Palmer’s story with Mariska Hargitay is one for the books (or rather, one for the TV screen and now, the book shelf). It’s not every day you get to meet your childhood idol, let alone have them save your character from a hurricane in a beloved TV show.

Keke Palmer reminisced about feeling awestruck when she met Mariska Hargitay during her guest appearance on an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit back in 2005.

Reflecting on my BuzzFeed Puppy Interview, promoting my new book, “Master of Me,” I couldn’t help but reminisce about the moment when Olivia Benson left me spellbound.

As a kid who lived and breathed her show growing up, I felt incredibly fortunate when, at the tender age of 12, I got the chance to collaborate with her. You see, in the storyline, she rescued me during Hurricane Katrina – a moment that happened when I was lying in a hospital bed, gasping for air as my character. It was my first encounter with her, and let me tell you, it left me utterly speechless. In that instant, I truly believed I was a victim of Katrina, fighting for my last breath.

I was utterly astounded to find myself in the presence of the heroine who had rescued countless children, just like me. For much of that scene, I was left reeling in disbelief. To my mom, I gasped, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t think, I can’t speak… This is Olivia Benson,’ and she responded, ‘You’ve got to push through.’ So, with a tremendous effort, I managed to make it through the scene.

Palmer shared that following the wrap-up of filming and a shared meal, Hargitay extended an invitation for both her and the actress playing her onscreen younger sibling from the episode to join her inside her trailer, which was filled with treats.

She possessed an array of luxurious bathroom items and various attractive goods that many girls adore. She generously shared it all with us, and I still recall this act fondly. As we exited her room laden with baskets filled with these treasures, it was a moment that will forever remain one of the sweetest memories for me,” she reminisced.

In time, the Nope star disclosed that she contacted Hargitay through a private message, expressing her continued affection for her and reminiscing about wonderful moments they shared together, despite the fact that Hargitay might not recall her now.

She said something like, ‘Keke, absolutely, I recall you. I adore you immensely. I’m incredibly proud of all your accomplishments,’ and it was a sweet, brief exchange. But remember, Olivia Benson is always ready to handle any situation.

In season seven, episode 10 of SVU titled “Storm”, Palmer made a guest appearance. The storyline revolved around Tasha (Palmer), along with her younger sisters who were taken from disaster-stricken New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, only to end up in New York City. Two of the sisters managed to break free, but one was re-captured. Fortunately, Tasha aided then-detectives Benson and Stabler (played by Christopher Meloni) in tracking down the kidnapper and locating the missing sister.
