As a die-hard fan of the DC Universe, I must say Connie Nielsen‘s passion for Hippolyta is truly inspiring! Her heartfelt plea to reprise her role as the immortal queen of the Amazons is music to my ears.
The DC Extended Universe has come to an end, but it will continue to have some carry-overs for the upcoming DC Universe franchise, such as John Cena’s Peacemaker, Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, and Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle. Now, Connie Nielsen has expressed interest in joining this group, having portrayed Hippolyta in Wonder Woman, both versions of Justice League, and Wonder Woman 1984 previously. She’s even humorously (yet enthusiastically) asked James Gunn and the DC leadership team to make it happen.
At the premier of her recently released film, Gladiator II (opened last weekend), Nielsen excitedly voiced her desire to once again portray Hippolyta, sharing this during an interview with IGN.
Hey folks from DC, I’ve got a special claim on Hippolyta, if you don’t mind! Pretty please, I really need it! I adore Hippolyta deeply and I can’t help but love those Amazons and their world even more. I mean, isn’t there anything more fantastic? It’s like us, riding through that amazing alley in our gleaming armor – nothing beats that feeling!
You gotta love that enthusiasm! Just like in the comics, Connie Nielsen’s Hippolyta was the immortal queen of the Amazons on Themyscira and mother of Diana, played by Gal Gadot. Hippolyta did her best to shield Diana from the outside world, but when Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor crashed on the island and informed the Amazons about World War I, the queen reluctantly allowed her daughter to accompany Steve back to help end the conflict. Hippolyta appeared in a flashback to Diana’s childhood years in Wonder Woman 1984, and in Justice League, she and the other Amazons unsuccessfully tried to prevent Steppenwolf from stealing Themyscira’s Mother Box.
Could there be a chance that Connie Nielsen might reprise her role as Hippolyta in the DC Universe? Although it’s not extremely likely, given past examples of similar casting choices, and the fact that an upcoming DC TV show, “Paradise Lost,” is focused on Themyscira’s political conflicts prior to Wonder Woman’s birth, it could be feasible. With Hippolyta expected to be a significant character in this series, and James Gunn, who jointly manages DC Studios with Peter Safran, potentially open to the idea of bringing Nielsen back, it’s worth considering the possibility.
It may take a while before we find out if that’s feasible, but here’s the current plan for DCU shows. The animated series “Creature Commandos” is set to premiere on December 5, 2024, followed by “Peacemaker” Season 2 in summer 2025. The next show in development is “Lanterns,” starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, which is expected to air in 2026. After that, it’s not clear which DCU show will be produced next. Possible candidates include “Paradise Lost,” “Waller,” or “Booster Gold.
Regardless of whether Connie Nielsen is involved or not, we’ll make sure to update you about any developments related to Paradise Lost. Just like the other DCU shows, you’ll be able to stream it with a Max subscription once it becomes available.
