As a seasoned player of Clash of Clans, I can confidently say that building an effective base is not just about stacking walls and defenses willy-nilly. It’s like constructing a fortress in the middle of a battlefield, where every brick, every tower, and every trap plays a crucial role in your survival.
A crucial element when it comes to engaging in battles in Clash of Clans is safeguarding your hard-earned trophies and loot. In this article, we’ll explore effective methods for shielding your base, and even enhance your strategies, as we share some clever tips on how to fortify your stronghold in CoC.
As a gamer, I find that the success of my gameplay heavily depends on the design of my base. While having an effective offensive strategy is crucial, the way I arrange my defenses gives me the opportunity to safeguard the resources I’ve gathered or stolen from others.
Building a shoddy fortification might provide an unintended opening for adversaries to seize your treasures, achievements, or battle honors, whereas a thoughtfully planned fortress will safeguard critical assets and deter both foes and their minions from entering.

Here are our expert tips to keeping all your best stuff under lock and key.
1 Understand the building roles
Buildings: What needs protection?
When considering your base design, knowing what to protect and what not to protect is critical.
In most cases, it’s advisable to situate your defenses and storage facilities within the safety of your fortified walls, while structures like army camps should always remain outside. Imagine your base as a dartboard; the center or ‘bullseye’ area represents the safest part of your base, so you want to keep your vital structures there.
What’s in the bullseye?
Town Hall
– Depending on your strategy, you can either place your Town Hall inside or outside your walls. In trophy mode, your TH is the bullseye. It’s the building you want to protect the most of any other. Destroying it is the difference between a 1-star and 2-3 star attacks.
To optimize trophy hunting, position your town hall within your fortified walls, centrally located, and secure it with robust defenses. On the other hand, when focusing solely on farming resources to build your settlement, place the town hall outside your walls in a corner. This setup allows potential invaders an easy target for trophies while sparing your valuable resource storage areas from attack.
Storages
– Unless you are designing a war base or in a full scale trophy push, your storages are the most important building to protect. Of the storages, the most important resource in the game is dark elixir. Outside of your TH, dark elixir storage should be your most protected building. It should be at the centre of your base, well insulated with defences. No exceptions.
It’s advisable to have storage areas enclosed within your fortifications, with defensive structures (ideally splash type) nearby for safety. The storage locations should be dispersed evenly across your base rather than being concentrated in a single spot. A common error that many players commit is clustering all their storages at the center of their base.
An experienced looter can quickly penetrate deep into the compound, making off with all the accumulated goods. Scattering storage areas makes it harder for a thief to take everything they want.

Clan Castle
– Your clan castle should be viewed as both a defensive building and a storage. Your clan castle allows you to add an extra layer of protection with clan troops (provided you are in a clan) and also hold all war loot.
It would be strategic to position your Clan Castle right in the heart of your base, close to your Dark Elixir Storage. This arrangement makes it harder for enemies to deploy your Clan Castle troops before an attack, and it also safeguards your resources effectively.
2 Innermost layer of defence should be just outside the bullseye
In the outer perimeter of my fortified bases, I always station my initial defense lines. These defenses are equipped with either splash damage capabilities or deal hefty blows, ensuring a robust barrier against potential threats.
- Mortar – Mortar defences provide splash damage to multiple targets. Mortars have a wide attack range and should be placed in the innermost portion of your base. This will allow them attack and destroy groups of troops (such as archers) from afar.
- X-Bow & Inferno Tower – Xbow and inferno towers should almost always be placed towards the centre of your base. Both of these defences provide high levels of damage to any invading troops and are extremely value in protecting your loot.
- Hidden Tesla – At town hall 7 and above, you have access to hidden tesla. These defensive buildings provide surprise defence against raiding troops. In farming mode, placement of tesla near storages provides extra defensive support. In trophy mode, teslas should be placed near your town hall.
3 Place your mid-level layer of defence
Situated just beyond your fortifications, it’s advisable to establish additional defensive structures. These serve as a second line of defense following the archer towers and cannons, should they be engaged elsewhere.
- Wizard Tower – Wizard towers deal splash damage to multiple targets, but have a narrow range for attack. Suggested placement is in the 2nd layer of defence (behind archer towers and cannons) and near storages for farming bases. Placement near storages will allow them to quickly destroy groups of troops such as archers, barbs, and goblins.
- Air defence & Air Sweeper – Air defences serve only one purpose: attacking air troops. They are incredibly destructive to air units, but merely act as an obstacle to any ground unit. Suggested placement is scattered throughout the inner layers your base giving maximum defensive coverage should you be attacked from air.
- Heroes – Placing your heroes inside your walls adds an extra layer of defence. They should be placed within the walls behind the first layer of defensive buildings like cannons and archer towers.
In simpler terms, during peaceful town hall stages excluding wars, aerial assaults are relatively rare compared to ground attacks. Consequently, air defense structures may not be crucial for protection initially, so they can be strategically positioned at the outskirts of your base to divert potential attackers’ focus.
4 Have some outer rings of defence
For optimal protection, the perimeter of your base should house your initial line of defense. This defensive line should extend over a broad area to initiate the destruction of enemy forces as soon as possible.
Constructing a base is crucial because it often hinders enemy advancement, weakens their forces, and is generally beneficial in many ways.
On certain occasions, it’s beneficial to position towers in the four outermost corners (corners of the base) to delay enemy progress. These towers may not always deal significant damage, but they can effectively distract enemies, reducing their time and acting as diversions. Essentially, they serve as decoy structures.
- Cannon & Archer Tower – These defences provide single target damage and have a wide radius for their attack range. Suggested placement for these units is just within your walls to act as the first layer of defence.
5 Make use of everything else
Don’t sleep on the smaller elements, such as Traps, Walls and various buildings. These could also play a defensive role, and you never know when a single trap could prove more useful than the strongest Air Defense tower.
- Traps – Well placed traps are essential to a good defence. Scattering your traps around your layout will increase the likelihood that enemy troops trigger them. After observing attacks on your base, you should be able to know where troops are often likely to travel. Adjust your traps accordingly.
- Walls – Regardless of whether you’re farming or trophy hunting, walls one of your biggest assets. Walls are your first line of defence and can provide your defences valuable extra time against invading troops.
- Army Camp, Barracks, Laboratory, Spell Factory, Collectors, Builder’s Huts – All of these buildings are nothing more than obstacles for invading troops. Assuming you regularly collect resources from your collectors, these buildings should be placed outside of your wall as a distraction for troops such as barbarians, archers, and wizards.
It’s useful to note: These barriers can be positioned away from the wall, yet still within the defensive reach. This allows invading forces to become preoccupied with them as diversions, giving your defenses additional time to eliminate them.
6 There are several strategies for wall layouts
One layer
This design uses a single layer of wall to prevent troops from accessing the main portions of the base. Think of it as a fence around a house.
Typically this “fence” is used with an inner fence protecting your most valuable resources.
As a devoted player, I’ve found that this particular base design is often not too challenging for an attacking force equipped with Wall Breakers, particularly at lower town stages.
Compartmentalized
This design uses walls to create many separate compartments containing one to several buildings within the base.
One way to rephrase the given sentence in a more natural, easier-to-read style could be: “This design offers a major benefit by greatly reducing the speed of approaching enemy forces as they transition between different areas. This provides ample time for your defensive structures to eliminate them.
A potential drawback of this approach is that it often necessitates selecting which parts belong within and without your structure, as a significant portion of your walls might need to be utilized.

7 Other CoC base-building tips and strategies!
- Spread out your storages – Don’t place any one defence directly next to the same defence. Spread them out!
- Watch replays and update your base – Use the replays of attacks on your base to help improve your defence and keep the next raider out.
- Check other players – To learn what works for other players, you should always check out some of the other players’ bases. This could give you some unique ideas of what could work for you.
- Don’t be afraid of failure – Sometimes you will fail against some opponents. That’s perfectly normal. What you should do is take every loss as an opportunity to learn where you could improve your base, fortify a wall, or place another layer of defence (or offence).
- Constantly work on strengthening your base – Be it through research, building some new, or upgrading something old, doesn’t matter. You need to always upgrade anything you have to increase your power, even if it’s just by 1 point.
