'The Boys' Season 5 Will Make Homelander Vulnerable for the First Time

As a long-time supporter of The Boys series, I eagerly await the fifth and final season, especially since Antony Starr has revealed that Homelander will be more vulnerable than ever before. Over these past four seasons, we’ve seen Homelander’s complexities unfold like an intricate onion, with each layer peeled back to reveal a deeper, darker truth.

Over the last four seasons of “The Boys”, the series has progressively unveiled the complexities of Antony Starr’s character Homelander. In a recent chat, the actor disclosed that Season 5 will portray the character in a state weaker than ever before, as viewers will witness the mighty superhero in a physically vulnerable position for the first time. As a satirical take on Superman, Homelander shares many of the Blue Boy Scout’s powers (like flight, super strength, invincibility, and laser eyes), with an American flag motif on his attire (his cape resembling something from a Michael Bay film). Nevertheless, the character hasn’t displayed a kryptonite-like weakness – at least, not one that viewers have encountered so far.

In an interview with Variety and showrunner Eric Kripke, Antony Starr hinted at what’s in store for his character, the villainous supe, in the fifth and final season of The Boys. According to Starr, “Homelander begins the season grappling with his own mortality.” Previously, Homelander had only come close to losing a fight when Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), both enhanced beings themselves, teamed up against him in Season 3. However, that was a battle between supes. Towards the end of Season 4, there was a hint of a virus capable of wiping out the supe population. Could Butcher have found a way to use this virus on Homelander?

Starr playfully hinted that he uncovers his mortality in a manner unique to this series. Given The Boys’ penchant for graphic violence, the scene will likely be quite gruesome. Pondering his own mortality, Starr noted that Homelander is preoccupied with “the concept of legacy.” In Season 4, Homelander attempted to be a good father to Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), but his self-centered nature frequently hindered him. It appears that Homelander is succumbing to those traits in Season 5, as his aim for Ryan remains to become the next Homelander, rather than what Ryan truly desires. Starr elaborated on this point:

“So, he really wants to set up his son as the next baton carrier in Vought.”

Although Antony Starr portrays a wickedly evil villain who has an unusual fondness for Smash Mouth, he still recognizes the human side beneath the red, white, and blue costume. However, Homelander’s greatest weakness is his empathy – a trait that surfaces only occasionally. In the actor’s own words, “I’ve always believed his humanity to be his biggest weakness.” Starr elaborated on this idea, stating that in Season 4, Homelander grapples with uncertainty about his future and struggles to reconcile his love for his son with his inflated ego, which gives depth and relatability to the character.

Currently, production for Season 5 of “The Boys” is underway, as confirmed by Showrunner Eric Kripke. While the main series will conclude with Season 5, Kripke has not parted ways with the “The Boys” universe entirely. In fact, the second season of the popular spin-off, “Gen V,” is also being produced. Additionally, two new spin-offs are in development. One of these, titled “The Boys: Mexico,” starring Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, has been in the works for some time now, with Kripke reassuring fans that the international series is still moving forward. The latest addition to the spin-off family is “Vought Rising.” This show takes place decades before “The Boys” and delves into the origins of the superhero conglomerate, Vought.
