As a long-time Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of these superheroes and their stories, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World.” The anticipation is palpable, especially with Anthony Mackie stepping into the Captain America role for the first time. However, the real twist here is Robert Downey Jr.’s transformation from Iron Man to Doctor Doom. It’s like watching a villain origin story unfold right before our eyes!
With the release of “Captain America: Brave New World” just around the corner within three months, Marvel enthusiasts eagerly anticipate Anthony Mackie’s debut as Captain America in his own film. However, given that Robert Downey Jr. has been announced as the next major antagonist in the Avengers, fans are equally excited about the upcoming reunion of these Marvel stars. Mackie himself has expressed excitement for this anticipated showdown as well.
During their visit to Brazil for the local D23 event, Anthony Mackie (the latest Captain America) expressed his anticipation about facing Robert Downey Jr., who is expected to portray Doctor Doom in future projects. In Mackie’s own words:
For quite some time, Robert Downey Jr. has been due for a challenging experience, and I can’t help but feel proud that such an event is finally happening for him!
Back in 2019, Robert Downey Jr.’s Avengers team triumphed against Thanos in “Avengers: Endgame.” Now, things have taken a different turn. In an interview with Nerdbunker, Chris Evans (Captain America) playfully teased that RDJ, who is set to debut as Doctor Doom, deserves whatever he gets when the movie premieres in May 2026. Additionally, it’s anticipated that his new MCU character will spearhead “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is scheduled for release the following year.
At this year’s Marvel presentation in Hall H during San Diego Comic-Con, viewers were taken aback when the actor portraying Iron Man unexpectedly showed up to declare that he will embody Doctor Doom in two forthcoming Marvel films.
Originally, it was planned for Jonathan Majors’ character Kang the Conqueror to succeed Thanos as the main antagonist of the Avengers. However, due to legal matters and allegations that Majors had to address, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) changed direction, opting instead for Doctor Doom as the next adversary. Given that we’re in The Multiverse Saga, there’s a peculiar symmetry in Downey’s character becoming the team’s next foe.

Fans have had a range of reactions to Downey’s casting, but there’s a certain charm to the Avengers crew squabbling with RDJ and his character following Tony Stark’s impressive history. Earlier, Anthony Mackie echoed these sentiments when discussing the Doctor Doom unveiling outshining the Brave New World snippets at SDCC. Playfully, Mackie hinted he’d love a chance to throw a punch at RDJ in the next Avengers film.
Following Iron Man’s memorable farewell in Avengers: Endgame, where he selflessly gave up his life to save the universe by vanquishing Thanos after employing the Infinity Stones to undo the villain’s scheme, it promises to be intriguing when the actor gets a shot at portraying a dramatically distinct character within the MCU. He’ll be joining forces with the Russo Brothers once more for the upcoming Avengers films, which seems to have been a prerequisite for his comeback.
In the upcoming trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World,” due for release on Valentine’s Day, 2025, you’ll have a chance to see Mackie.
