As a long-time musical enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the enchanting world of “Wicked,” I wholeheartedly side with Cynthia Erivo on this matter. The joy that these timeless tunes bring to both performer and audience is immeasurable, and it’s only natural for fans to want to join in the chorus of “Defying Gravity” or hum along to “The Wizard and I.
Cynthia Erivo has no problem with moviegoers singing along during screenings of Wicked.
In fact, she fully supports it.
On Thanksgiving Day last week, the leading actress of the movie attended the Macy’s Parade in New York City. During the event, she was interviewed by Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, and Savannah Guthrie, who were hosting NBC’s live broadcast of the parade. Hoda asked Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s movie version of the musical, about the topic that has sparked debates among fans online and mentioned that many people have been humming along during screenings at the theater.
Great! I’m on board,” Erivo said. “We’ve been practicing it for quite some time now, so let’s invite others to sing along too. It’s just fantastic!
She falls into the camp of folks who find enjoyment in singing along with the songs featured in the movie, including beloved tunes “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “The Wizard and I.” On the other side of the debate are the ticketbuyers who prefer to hear only the actors singing along and don’t want their moviegoing experience disrupted.
The second group’s position was supported by AMC Theatres, who prior to the film’s premiere, urged theater-goers not to join in with the singing during a screening. Some cinemas, like Alamo Drafthouse, organized separate sing-along events for those eager to harmonize with the actors on screen.
Another debate dividing Wicked fans centers on the issue of taking photos during screenings.
On Thursdays, Erivo shared her delight about being involved in the movie that shattered numerous box office milestones.
Erivo described it as an amazing, hard-to-believe encounter. Sharing this fantastic event with others is truly special. We’ve kept it private up until now, but now everyone else gets to see it too,” (paraphrased).
The actress-singer gave Kotb a bouquet of flowers as a farewell gift since she’s departing from the Today show in January. However, it’s important to note that this won’t be her last role within the NBC family, as she will still participate in the 2024 parade broadcast.
Before we get started, these flowers are a small token of appreciation for you since I know this is your final Thanksgiving parade performance. I wanted to express my joy in celebrating this milestone and to say, we genuinely care for you. Thank you for the tireless efforts you’ve put in over all these years.
