As a dedicated gamer and ardent fan of both movies and TV series that delve into the realm of monstrous titans, I can’t help but share my excitement about the upcoming season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Having spent countless hours navigating through various digital landscapes in search of hidden treasures and clues, I wholeheartedly agree with Anna Sawai that Cate Randa deserves more agency in Season 2.
Previously this year, the movie “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” was scheduled for release in 2024, and much like its predecessor, “Godzilla vs. Kong”, it proved to be a massive box office hit. However, that wasn’t the only MonsterVerse story worth watching in 2024. In January, the Season 1 finale of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” was released, and just a few months later, the announcement for Season 2 followed. As of now, it remains undetermined when Apple TV+ subscribers can look forward to streaming the upcoming episodes of “Monarch”. However, Anna Sawai has given us some insight into what she believes will happen to her character, Cate Randa, in the next season, and I wholeheartedly concur with her sentiments.
Prior to garnering praise for her role as Toda Mariko in the series “Shogun” (available on Hulu), and winning a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Sawai was outmaneuvering giants such as Godzilla in the show “Monarch”. With filming for Season 2 now underway, here’s what the actress shared with TVLine about her aspirations for her character, Cate.
It seems to me that Cate could benefit from having greater control over her circumstances. In the first season, she appears more like a victim, finding herself thrust into these events and at times yearning for her old life. However, after descending into Axis Mundi, it’s expected that she will undergo a transformation. She has witnessed things she was previously unaware of, and now they have questions to answer and tasks to complete.
In the first season of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”, Cate Randa was faced with numerous events, such as discovering her secret half-brother Kentaro, joining a worldwide quest with him, May and Lee Shaw to locate their mutual father, encountering Axis Mundi and meeting her grandmother Keiko who had not aged due to time moving differently there. When Cate, May and Keiko returned from Axis Mundi in 2017, it was two years after the initial disappearance of the former two women. Thus, Anna Sawai’s observation that much happened to Cate is accurate; however, it would be refreshing for her to have more control when Season 2 begins.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that when it comes to Titans, there’s only so much we can control in a face-to-face encounter. But with those colossal beasts out of sight, I’m eagerly looking forward to uncovering how Sawai’s agency for Cate unfolds in the second season of “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” While we might need to exercise patience, as no specific plot details for Season 2 have been disclosed yet beyond Amber Midthunder joining the cast, the cliffhanger ending of Season 1 suggests that the Apple TV+ series will delve deeper into the era bridging the first Godzilla movie and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It’s also plausible that Apex Cybernetics could play a larger role in the storyline as it moves forward.
