As a lifelong fan of the ‘Alien’ franchise, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness and nostalgia as I bid farewell to three of my favorite installments – ‘Alien’, ‘Alien 3’, and ‘Alien: Resurrection’. These films have been my companions through countless sleepless nights, their terrifying yet captivating narratives leaving an indelible mark on my horror-loving heart.
I’ve got some disappointing news for fellow Alien enthusiasts who rely on Hulu for their fix of the Ridley Scott-created series – most titles from the Alien franchise are set to depart from the streaming service in December. The surge in popularity of the Alien films, fueled in part by the recent release of Alien: Romulus, has been quite remarkable. For a while now, Hulu has served as the go-to platform for U.S. fans to immerse themselves in the entire Alien anthology, from the original Alien film right up to this year’s addition. However, it seems that come December, we may need to explore alternative avenues to continue our journey through the Alien universe.
Starting January 1st, 2025, the legendary Alien series will no longer be a part of Hulu’s library, with Alien (1979), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien: Resurrection (1997) departing on December 31, 2024. From the terrifying original Alien film to the contentious yet captivating Alien 3, and the unique and twisted Alien: Resurrection, each movie has made a lasting impact on the franchise and influenced the latest work by director Fede Alvarez in ways that will be deeply felt when they’re gone.
Although it’s disappointing for fans hoping to immerse themselves entirely in the Alien universe without having to search for different installments within the series, there’s a silver lining: The iconic film that many consider the best of them all, James Cameron’s 1986 blockbuster Aliens, is here to stay.
The Three ‘Alien’ Films And Their Respective Marks on the Franchise
Perhaps the most significant loss to the streaming service in the Alien collection is the film that started it all, Ridley Scott’s Alien. From H.R. Giger’s chilling Xenomorph design to the introduction of Sigourney Weaver’s iconic heroine, Ellen Ripley, the genre-defining film set a precedent for everything that would follow. Set aboard the Nostromo, Alien sees the ship’s crew picked off one by one in some of the most iconic deaths of the entire franchise, including that very first chest buster, and it should be streamed while you have the chance.
The movie “Alien 3” is captivating for a number of reasons. Its production, fraught with difficulties, marked David Fincher’s first directorial venture. Moreover, the choice to eliminate beloved characters from James Cameron’s “Aliens” sequel sparked much controversy. Even Fincher has voiced his dislike for the film. However, it remains crucial viewing, primarily because it lays the groundwork for “Alien Resurrection.
In the sequel titled “Alien Resurrection,” set centuries following the dramatic finale of “Alien 3,” the storyline brings back Sigourney Weaver’s character, Ellen Ripley, who seemingly perished at the end of the prior film, by resurrecting her. Jean-Pierre Jeunet helms this production, boasting an eclectic cast consisting of Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, and Brad Dourif, along with some truly spine-chilling Xenomorph designs. Notably, this installment marks a significant shift in tone for the series, incorporating a generous amount of dark humor throughout.
Although it’s unfortunate that these movies will no longer be available on the streaming platform as of December 31, there’s still ample opportunity to enjoy the entire collection before they disappear. Notably, lovers of the “Alien” franchise can catch Ridley Scott’s prequels in “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” and eagerly anticipate the upcoming Noah Hawley series, “Alien: Earth,” slated for summer 2025.
