Star Citizen’s Funding Just Passed The Third Quarter Of A Billion US Dollars

As a long-time gaming enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless promising titles, I find myself standing at the crossroads of bewilderment and fascination when it comes to Star Citizen. Having followed its development since its Kickstarter days, I’ve seen dreams turn into dollars and dollars into development years – all without a final product in sight.

Story Highlights

  • Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games’ sci-fi space RPG, has been in development for PC for more than 10 years.
  • As spotted on RSI’s funding page, the game has crossed the $750,000 mark, nearing close to a billion.
  • It bears noticing that Star Citizen’s development still hasn’t finished, and is currently lacking many fundamentals.

Star Citizen is undeniably one of the most contentious video game projects, having been in development for what seems like an eternity. Originating from a Kickstarter fundraiser, it has amassed over $750,000 by 2024. The fact that Cloud Imperium has dedicated over a decade to this project without delivering as promised leaves its supporters questioning the future of the intellectual property.

In addition to Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games is simultaneously developing Squadron 42, a different first-person shooter set in space, which is also the single-player campaign for their ongoing space MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) that’s still in pre-alpha phase. I have a feeling we might not see this game enter some form of beta testing until at least 2030.

Star Citizen Continues To Spark Controversy With No Release Date In Sight

As a gamer myself, I’ve got to hand it to Star Citizen – it nails some aspects that other games just can’t seem to match. It’s not often you find a game that’s this immersive, visually stunning, and committed to realism like no other in the gaming industry. From the get-go, it sweeps you off your feet with its captivating experience and jaw-dropping graphics.

Yet, it’s important to note that the main issue isn’t about the specific details. Regardless of the 14 years spent on it, including pre-production, Star Citizen remains largely unfinished and incomplete. As a result, what you encounter is far from a complete space-faring RPG experience.

Over the years, it’s faced numerous periods of challenging production, even being labeled as ‘development purgatory’, according to a former employee at CIG.

This is a perfect example of what happens when people vote with their wallets – it makes them realize that it was a bad decision and that they should learn going forward. I think this is the key to going forward for the entire project. I think that the team can deliver key gameplay improvements going forward that encourage players to play and return, rather than trying to drip-feed concepts to people who may never fly them,” said u/Ryden-55 in a descriptive post on Reddit.

Today, launching Star Citizen might not yield much satisfaction since the game lacks extensive content. The existing features require further refinement, which can be compared to fine-tuning a mechanism.

Be sure to post your thoughts about the project and if you’re a supporter, let us know that as well before moving on.
