Netflix Sets New Action Series 'Last Samurai Standing' for 2025

As a movie critic with a penchant for action films and a soft spot for martial arts epics, I must say that Netflix has truly outdone themselves with their upcoming series, “Last Samurai Standing.” With a release date set for 2025, this promises to be a gripping tale of survival and honor reminiscent of Squid Game, but with the added flair of samurais.

The streaming service keeps impressing in the entertainment sector, announcing a 2025 release for an enthralling martial arts series titled “Last Samurai Standing”. This show, inspired by the manga “Ikusagami”, is set to offer a compelling story of survival and honor. It revolves around 292 warriors who meet at a temple for a fierce competition, with a 100-billion-yen reward as incentive. Essentially, it’s like “Squid Game” but featuring samurai, making it an intriguing prospect that we can’t wait to see.

Amidst a fierce battle for survival, our protagonist, played by Jun’ichi Okada (known for his roles in ‘From Up on Poppy Hill’ and ‘Tales from Earthsea’), is thrust into the fray. He must endure the clash of samurai swords to protect his wife and child. As reported by What’s on Netflix, ‘Last Samurai Standing’, part of the streamer’s international release lineup, is expected to premiere in 2025. Although a precise launch date remains undisclosed, anticipate a series rich with intense martial arts sequences as you delve into its gripping narrative, revealed in the official synopsis that follows.

Taking place in the late 19th century during Japan’s Meiji period, ‘Last Samurai Standing’ unfolds at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto. As darkness falls, 292 formidable warriors assemble, enticed by the prospect of a massive reward worth 100 billion yen. Our main character, Shujiro Saga (played by Junichi Okada), is among them, participating in this perilous competition with one purpose: to secure the well-being of his ailing spouse and offspring.

Although only Jun’ichi Okada has been announced as a cast member so far, director Michihito Fujii hinted that the show will boast a large ensemble cast. It’s likely that several other actors will portray samurais who become embroiled in this lethal competition. He shared this information through Netflix.

We’re developing a distinctive universe featuring a talented group of actors. It’s a huge responsibility on our shoulders to bring something truly extraordinary to life. I’m thrilled to be part of this project, where we can craft an extraordinary tale, assemble a stellar cast, and produce stunning visuals. Our goal is to create a masterpiece that will captivate audiences in Japan and across the globe.

In addition to his roles as a producer and action coordinator for the show, Jun’ichi Okada expresses great enthusiasm about helming “Last Samurai Standing.” He can hardly contain his anticipation to deliver “action, dramatic elements, insightful social commentary, and enjoyable entertainment” to global viewers.

Upon contacting me by Netflix’s executive producer Mr. Takahashi, I found myself engrossed in historical dramas at the time. Despite this, my mind was brimming with strategies to make this genre successful, not just within Japan, but globally. I recognized their potential for action, drama, social commentary, and entertainment, yet I felt they could be pushed even further. This led me to discover Imamura’s manga, which was crafted in a manner that appealed to modern audiences. The prospect of adapting it sparked immense excitement within me.

Netflix has been on a roll with action productions that are keeping viewers engaged. This year alone, they’ve dropped titles such as “Rebel Ridge”, “The Shadow Strays”, and the martial arts epic, “Uprising”. Next year, in addition to “Last Samurai Standing”, the platform plans to debut the action-packed thriller “Havoc” starring Tom Hardy, directed by Gareth Evans of “The Raid” fame. So, it looks like their winning streak will carry on.
