As a connoisseur of captivating performances and a fervent admirer of Harley Quinn, I find myself drawn to the enchanting world of actresses who have demonstrated remarkable range and depth in their roles. Among the myriad names suggested, one that truly stands out is Imogen Poots.
It seems quite likely that Harley Quinn will eventually appear in Matt Reeves’ Batman Universe, known as “The Batman Epic Crime Saga.” Given the number of films featuring the Clown Princess of Crime over the last decade, even though she was created in 1992, it would be incomplete without her presence in this new series of DC movies starring Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight.
It’s uncertain if Dr. Harleen Quinzel, formerly known as the villain, will appear in “The Batman Part II”, but if she does, it promises to be an intriguing addition to the dark portrayal of Gotham City, further explored in the new DC TV show, “The Penguin”. If this happens, I can’t help but speculate who might take on her role. In fact, I’ve given thought to this and compiled a list of talented actors whom I believe would excel as Harley Quinn opposite Barry Keoghan’s Joker in the future.
Sydney Sweeney
It’s widely believed among many viewers that Sydney Sweeney didn’t have a particularly enjoyable first outing in a superhero movie, as she starred in the 2024 release of Madame Web, a film that received harsh criticism within the Sony Spider-Man Universe. Despite my enthusiasm for other Marvel characters that Sweeney could portray, I strongly feel that a more promising second chance at success in comic book films would be to give her the role of Harley Quinn, which would also provide the skilled actress with an opportunity to embody a character who is deeply troubled and unstable.
Margaret Qualley
A standout actress who seems exceptionally skilled at portraying disturbed characters is Margaret Qualley, as evidenced by her performances in films such as Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” the under-appreciated dark comedy “Sanctuary,” and Coralie Fargeat’s acclaimed body horror film, “The Substance.” In my opinion, all that Andie MacDowell’s daughter needs to do is dye her hair blonde, and she could easily land the role of Harley Quinn.
Rosa Salazar
In a natural and easy-to-read manner, Rosa Salazar, an actress known for playing eccentric roles in shows like ‘Wedding Season’ on Hulu and ‘Brand New Cherry Flavor’ on Netflix, is poised to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Diamondback in the upcoming film ‘Captain America: Brave New World’. Let’s hope her future with Marvel won’t hinder her potential for more roles.
Florence Pugh
Florence Pugh, who has previously portrayed tough characters like Yelena Belova in the MCU and Dani Ardor in Midsommar (a role that delves into mental health), could seamlessly transition into the role of Harley Quinn with her versatile acting skills if she simply merges these qualities and allows her innate talent to take over.
Amanda Seyfried
Although Amanda Seyfried lacks prior experience with comic book adaptation roles or playing unhinged characters, I strongly feel she is suitable for an outstanding Harley Quinn. For me, her qualifications aren’t solely based on her Brooklyn femme-fatale accent from her Academy Award-nominated performance as Marion Davies in “Mank,” but rather, her eyes possess the necessary depth to deliver a convincing portrayal all by themselves.
Imogen Poots
English actress Imogen Poots possesses captivating blue eyes, which could suitably accentuate any potential portrayal of Harley Quinn in a sequel to The Batman. Unlike Amanda Seyfried, many of Poots’ notable films and television shows (such as the Amazon Prime sci-fi western Outer Range, the Twilight Zone-inspired Vivarium, and the unpredictable dark comedy Filth) often challenge her with roles that demand a dive into more complex characters. I believe that assuming the role of DC Comics’ villain could be Poots’ greatest acting achievement in terms of exploring such intricate character depth.
Naomi Scott
2024 rolled around, and in Parker Finn’s chilling sequel to “Smile”, I delivered an unforgettable act as a pop star possessed by a vicious demon. It was then that people started noticing the depth of Naomi Scott’s talent. If she were to pour that same intensity into a Harley Quinn character, it could create something truly remarkable.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo
Examining Natasha Liu Bordizzo’s notable films and series such as Ahsoka, The Society, and The Voyeurs, it is evident that she has delivered captivating performances in roles of a generally somber nature. It seems plausible that the Australian-born actress, with her mixed Chinese and Italian heritage, would relish an opportunity to explore new territory by taking on the Harley Quinn character. A more subdued portrayal, characterized by a chilling undercurrent of madness, might suit the darker tone of the Batman Epic Crime Saga particularly well.
Lady Gaga
It seems unlikely that anyone holds Lady Gaga’s performance solely responsible for the negative critical response to “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Instead, it appears many felt she was underutilized as a broken Harley Quinn confined to Arkham Asylum. Therefore, I propose we offer Lady Gaga another opportunity to portray the character in a future DC Elseworlds tale. This story could delve deeper into her complexities and provide a platform for her to fully embody the character in her more definitive form.
It appears that I left out Margot Robbie’s name, whose interpretation of Harley Quinn came from the former DC Extended Universe. To be frank, I am uncertain if she fits the world presented in The Batman, but I must admit, I would eagerly welcome further appearances of Robbie’s memorable portrayal of Harley Quinn within the DCU continuity.
