As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and cinematic universes, I can confidently say that the current state of the big screen is nothing short of breathtaking! The sheer magnitude of success that Disney’s Moana 2 is experiencing at the box office is simply staggering.
At this extraordinary Thanksgiving celebration, domestic box office ticket sales are reaching unprecedented peaks, with Walt Disney Animation’s latest sensation, Moana 2, spearheading the surge.
The anticipated Disney sequel to the fantasy musical “Moana 2” is projected to make a grand debut over the holiday season, earning between $215 million and $220 million. This highly-anticipated release is expected to break numerous records, boasting the largest five-day opening ever, surpassing the current record held by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($204.6 million). Additionally, it will secure the title of the highest Thanksgiving opening and earner of all time, outperforming both “Frozen” ($93.6 million) and “Frozen II” ($125 million).
The family film is significantly surpassing predictions, to say the least. Initially, it was anticipated that its five-day holiday premiere would fall within the $125 million to $135 million bracket, which would have set a new record. However, by just Friday, it had grossed an impressive $192.7 million worldwide, with $140 million earned domestically and another $52.7 million from international markets.
With the powerful mix of movies like Moana 2, Universal’s Wicked, and Paramount’s Gladiator II, the total five-day earnings are expected to surpass previous records, soaring beyond $400 million. This would mark a significant post-pandemic achievement for the domestic box office, outdoing the current record holder, Thanksgiving 2018, which grossed $316 million domestically.
The solo release of “Wicked” is projected to earn approximately $118.4 million over five days following its record-breaking opening weekend of $112 million, with a domestic total of $263 million so far. By the end of Sunday, it’s expected to surpass “Grease” ($188.2 million) and claim the title as the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation ever. Directed by Jon M. Chu, “Wicked” features Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in its starring roles.
Under Ridley Scott’s direction, the movie titled “Gladiator II” is projected to gross around $45 million in the U.S. over a five-day period, bringing its domestic total to $112 million. On a global scale, it’s expected to earn close to $400 million. The star-studded cast features Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal.
Initially conceived for television, “Moana 2” was later revamped into a theatrical follow-up. The initial “Moana”, with original songs penned by Lin-Manuel Miranda, had a decent but unremarkable run at the box office in 2016. However, it later became a cultural phenomenon and even topped as the most streamed film across all platforms in 2023. Boasting new tunes from Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, “Moana 2” is produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino.
Under the guidance of directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, the sequel brings back voice talents Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. The narrative finds Moana embarking on an unanticipated journey across ancient waters following a message from her ancestors. Johnson once again lends his voice to the character of demigod Maui.
Critics haven’t been as generous with their reviews for Moana 2, contrasted to the original, but it seems audiences are still eagerly anticipating it. The movie’s audience rating (referred to as the “popcornmeter”) on Rotten Tomatoes stands at 88 percent, whereas it received an A- CinemaScore (as opposed to an A for Moana). Additionally, it’s gathering positive responses from viewers on PostTrak. However, its critics score on Rotten Tomatoes is currently lower, at 66 percent, compared to the 95 percent of the first film.
Johnson’s films have made it into the top five, with “Red One,” a holiday movie produced by Amazon MGM Studios and starring both Johnson and Chris Evans, predicted to earn fourth place during its five-day run. It raked in $19 million, bringing its domestic total to $76.4 million through Sunday. The film is currently in its third week of release.
With an estimated additional $5 million, Lionsgate’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is projected to secure a spot in the top five earners, bringing its total domestic gross to approximately $32.2 million after four weekends.
