As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that Backstreet Warriors has taken me back to the good old days of street-brawler games. The nostalgic feel and simple yet engaging gameplay have been a breath of fresh air in this era where most games are overly complex and filled with unnecessary bells and whistles.
Hey there fellow gamer! Welcome to Off The AppStore, a weekly roundup with a unique twist. Here, we feature games that you can play on your phone but they’re not from the usual suspects – the big two app markets: Google Play and the Apple AppStore. Let’s explore the lesser-known corners of mobile gaming together!
That means that there might be a bit of work required in downloading alternative AppStores or APKs, or that the games can simply be played in your phone browser. We’ll make sure to detail that for each game though. Anyway, read on to find a new game or experience to play Off The AppStore.
In recent times, it was almost impossible to avoid games featuring street fights, beat ’em ups, or street-themed action games where you’d be fighting against street thugs from a side-scrolling perspective in dimly lit streets. The revival of such a genre with Backstreet Warriors brings a sense of nostalgia and freshness as it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen these types of games.
Title Rewrite: Street Brawlers – A Familiar Tale
The gameplay is straightforward like a basic fighting game, featuring various moves such as an impressive combo ending with a lunging punch that stretches your reach when multiple enemies are aligned. Additionally, it offers a dynamic dive kick and the option to parry. However, with a move as thrilling as the dive kick, who would opt for parrying?
I really enjoy the atmosphere of Backstreet Warrriors when you’re victorious, and its retro, pixelated aesthetic brings a nostalgic charm, even though I can’t recall many brawlers from the time period it emulates. There’s an impressive array of adversaries, although they all behave similarly – and the music is fantastic, but you need to manually enable it since it seems to be turned off by default.
In most of the games we feature in this series, it’s a game made using the Pico8 engine. This implies that if you’re playing it in your browser, it would be best to expand it to full screen. On the other hand, having the game on Pico8 also means that a Gameboy-style digital controller will be readily available as soon as you start playing.
You can play Backstreet Warriors for free on its itch.io page.
