As a dedicated cinephile who has had the immense pleasure of immersing myself in the cinematic masterpieces of Paolo Sorrentino, I can confidently say that his latest collaboration with Toni Servillo, titled “La Grazia,” promises to be another unforgettable journey. The duo’s chemistry is as captivating as a Neapolitan sunset over the Bay of Naples, and their ability to breathe life into each character they portray is simply mesmerizing.
Renowned Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino will be working again with award-winning Neapolitan actor Toni Servillo, who played a significant role in Sorrentino’s Oscar-winning movie “The Great Beauty.” Their upcoming collaboration is titled “La Grazia,” marking their reunion for another feature film.
As a devoted admirer, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming film project by the talented Matteo Garrone, rumored to be a heartfelt love story. While specifics are being kept confidential for now, it’s exciting to know that the renowned director himself, Matteo, is penning the script and will commence filming in the springtime. The production of this masterpiece will be a collaborative effort between Fremantle-owned The Apartment and Matteo’s own production company, Numero 10. In Italy, the movie will be distributed by PiperFilm, promising a captivating cinematic experience for all of us eager fans.
PiperFilm’s latest release, “Parthenope” by Sorrentino, has been an incredible hit locally, earning it the title of the most successful Italian film of the year. The movie, a lavish tribute to Naples, has earned over $8 million at the box office, surpassing even the earnings for Sorrentino’s previous hit, “The Great Beauty”. Before its premiere at Cannes, A24 has acquired the rights for the U.S. release of “Parthenope”, and it is set to debut in the States on February 7th.
Servillo is frequently chosen by Sorrentino for acting roles. At the age of 65, this talented actor has starred in ten films directed by Sorrentino, portraying a wide range of characters such as a pop singer embroiled in a sex scandal in “One Man Up”, to Silvio Berlusconi, the infamous Italian leader, in “Loro”. Three of Servillo’s David di Donatello awards for Best Actor – Italy’s equivalent of the Oscar – were earned for his performances in Sorrentino movies. These include his portrayal of a drug-addicted mob accountant in “The Consequences of Love”, the sharp-witted writer and socialite Jep Gambardella in “The Great Beauty”, and his role as the controversial Italian politician Giulio Andreotti in “Il Divo”.
Variety was the first to break the news about Sorrentino’s new film.
