As a lifelong DC fan who has weathered the storm of multiple universes and reboots, I must admit that I’m both intrigued and relieved by the direction the new DC Universe (DCU) is taking under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership. The approach to continuity they’ve outlined, where direct references define what has happened, feels like a breath of fresh air, offering a balance between honoring the past and carving out a unique narrative path.
Under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the DC Universe (DCU) is evolving, sparking curiosity among fans about how key characters and groups will feature in this fresh start. While Creature Commandos marks the beginning of a new lineup of DC films and series, there’s also speculation regarding the placement of another renowned team within this continuity. Recently, insights from the writer of Slither have shed light on the status of the Justice League in the reimagined timeline, offering clarity to fans eagerly awaiting updates.
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn discussed the consistency within the DC Universe, focusing on the unexpected appearance of the Justice League in Peacemaker’s Season 1 finale. This scene included Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ezra Miller as The Flash, along with stand-ins for Superman and Wonder Woman in shadows. However, regarding the new DCU, Gunn, now both a filmmaker and CEO, has made it clear that such appearances are no longer part of the official storyline. In explaining the concept of canon to the publication, he clarified how these stories fit within the broader universe.
The character Peacemaker is easy to understand, except for a scene where a specific team (not yet established as the Justice League) appears towards the end. However, in the new DC Universe, if an earlier event is referenced in any show or movie, then it’s considered to have occurred. So we’re handling this inconsistency accordingly.
In this new Universe, they have a unique method to set it apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the earlier DC Extended Universe (DCEU). This approach gives creators the ability to choose what aspects from the old DCEU to include while crafting a brand-new storyline. By making direct references the key to continuity, the DCU can avoid getting bogged down by the intricacies of the past universe. This strategy may frustrate fans who love Zack Snyder’s Justice League and overall DCEU universe, but it prioritizes creative freedom while acknowledging the franchise’s roots.
The series titled “Creature Commandos” aligns with the continuity approach established by Gunn and Safran. This animated show unfolds after the conclusion of “Peacemaker” Season 1, focusing on Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) who assembles a fresh team of incarcerated monsters, headed by Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo). By transitioning from human prisoners to monster operatives, it mirrors the kind of storytelling consistency that the director behind “Guardians of the Galaxy” aims to uphold across the animated and live-action ventures within the DC Universe.
Flag Senior is set to play a crucial part in the forthcoming live-action Superman movie, which James Gunn refers to as the “real genesis” of the DC Universe. With the series Creature Commandos suggesting links to their upcoming superhero movies, it’s evident that the vision for the DCU by the Peacemaker showrunner involves a connected narrative spanning various mediums.
As a die-hard Justice League fan, I’m excited about the gradual and careful reintroduction of my beloved team as hinted by the DC bosses. Instead of rushing to set up the classic lineup, the DC Universe is wisely focusing on crafting strong individual stories that serve as a solid foundation for each character. This organic development will eventually lead to a harmonious team that fits perfectly into the new narrative structure.
Although the “group” hasn’t been established in this new cosmos as of yet, their past influence lingers strongly. When they eventually resurface, it’s hoped that their return will be both deserved and seamlessly woven into the broader narrative. With the ‘Creature Commandos’ and ‘Superman’ taking the forefront, the DCU is laying the groundwork for a thrilling reemergence of the Justice League, which I personally find exhilarating.
The initial stage of DCU, titled “Gods and Monsters,” starts with the upcoming animated series “Creature Commandos” set to air on TV schedules from December 5th, 2024. This show has garnered enthusiasm from TopMob’s Sean O’Connell. You can stream it with a Max subscription, giving you access not only to this series but also titles within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
