David Harbour Says 'Thunderbolts*' is "Surprising" and "Impressive"

As a cinephile who has traversed the vast cinematic landscapes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its inception, I must admit that the upcoming film “Thunderbolts*” piques my interest like no other. The teaser released at San Diego Comic-Con this year left me with a palpable sense of anticipation for what is to come.

This upcoming Marvel film, tentatively scheduled for Summer 2025, seems to deviate from the conventional team-up movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It promises a grittier narrative with morally complex characters and a compact, high-intensity storyline. One of its stars has already previewed a version of the film and hints that it aligns with Marvel’s recent efforts to enhance their production quality. In an interview with Cinema Blend for his role in Creature Commandos, (who plays Red Guardian in Thunderbolts*) shared his impressions, suggesting the cut he saw reflects Marvel’s current improvements in storytelling.

Marvel seems to be growing at a pace, though not without some adjustments. They appear to be readjusting their strategy regarding becoming too expansive, especially with the Disney+ content. I can hardly wait for you all to witness Thunderbolts*, as I find the direction they’ve taken it in quite intriguing and unexpected. It’s shaping up to be a genuine film experience, though opinions might vary. Nonetheless, I’ve had a sneak peek, and it’s truly impressive.

Marvel Studios has experienced a recent surge of success, significantly boosted by the impressive box office earnings of movies like Deadpool and Wolverine. These films not only set records as the highest-grossing R-rated films ever made, but also claimed the top spots for the year. During the festivities at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige took a moment to unveil sneak peeks of the upcoming projects in the Multiverse Saga. Among these revelations was the trailer for the upcoming team-up of anti-heroes known as Thunderbolts. The official trailer was later made available online for public viewing.

David Harbour Thinks Thunderbolts* is a Step in the Right for Marvel Studios.

Harbor notes that contemporary productions from prominent studios and streaming platforms often prioritize statistics and figures over the emotional narrative, but Thunderbolts appears to buck this trend, as it seems more focused on authentic human storytelling.

“I think the problem with all of this stuff is we get lost in the algorithm, or what we think works, or what the data tells us. But you can’t… this ineffable quality of human beings interacting with other human beings, that’s a special chemistry. It may not be nice. It may be unpleasant. But it has a certain electricity to it. And I think that that’s just all over Thunderbolts. And I’m so happy that Jake, the director, was so intent on capturing that. So intent on preserving that, and made that a priority. I was like, ‘Oof, this is good.’”

With Jonathan Majors leaving his role as Kang the Conqueror and Robert Downey Jr. stepping into Doctor Doom’s shoes in the Multiverse Saga, there seems to be a breath of fresh air blowing through Marvel Studios. While we’ll have to wait and see if Harbour’s comments prove accurate, it’s always intriguing when massive studio films like Thunderbolts focus on compelling character development.
